Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), the main opposition
in Parliament, who had gathered in Dilli Bazaar and Putali Sadak demanding
Koirala's resignation for his alleged part in corruption, eyewitnesses
said. Loyalists of the party uprooted railings along the road to the
central secretariat at Dilli Bazaar and Putali Sadak. Residents reported
the area was tense. Inspector General of Police Pradeep SJB Rana
escorted Koirala to Singha Durbar. Meanwhile reports say 22 Members of
Parliament from the main opposition, including senior leader of the party
Madhav Nepal and his deputy KP Oli have been arrested by the police. It is
not known where they were arrested. Nepalnews.com/rh/br/at Suspected Maoist rebels rob bank in Jhapa Kathmandu, April 15: Suspected Maoist rebels robbed a commercial bank in Jhapa, about 500 km east of Kathmandu, in broad day light Sunday. According to police, the suspected Maoist rebels robbed over Rs 9 million in cash and kind from the branch office of Rastriya Banijya Bank (National Commercial Bank), the government owned commercial bank, in Ghailadubba of Jhapa district at about 1.30pm Sunday. The branch office is located 24 km from the district headquarters. Bank officials said that more than 25-armed people entered the bank one by one in the disguise of customers and introduced themselves as Maoist guerrillas. They first enquired about the property of the bank from the accountant and demanded keys of the bank, a bank employee said. The accountant gave the key as they threatened to blow away the bank and kill all if they informed the police and refused to obey orders. The suspected rebels fled with all the cash, gold and solver within 15 minutes. They also took away all the weapons and ammunition from the security personnel from the bank. According to a bank employee police from the nearest post located a few kilometres from the bank reached the spot long after the suspected rebels fled even after they were informed in time.Nepalnews.com/yl/at Deuba asks Maoists to abandon violence Kathmandu, April 15: Former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba called on Maoists to abandon violence and come to the negotiating table to end the communist insurgency. Deuba made the call Saturday even as the government prepared to mobilise the army against the rebels. "The killing of a Nepali by another Nepali can only spell doom for the country," Deuba told a meeting in Syangja. Deuba said he opposed the Nepali Congress central working committee’s recommendation last week to deploy the army. Deuba’s report on resolving the Maoist insurgency that was submitted to the Koirala government last year has so far been ignored. Deuba, who is a second generation leader of the Nepali Congress, asked the opposition to call off street protests against Koirala even as he tries to dislodge the government and party chief in an internal party power struggle. "The opposition and the ruling party should seek a solution to the present crisis through negotiations. The street protests can go out of hand and it will not do anyone any good," he said. The opposition accuses Koirala of corruption and has been demanding his resignation. Terming the remarks unacceptable, Jhalanath Khanal, chief of the foreign affairs department of the main opposition in Parliament said: "Nepal will protest attempts to interfere in its internal affairs." Frank, in his statement Thursday, had said the United States is opposed to the attempts to overthrow an elected government by violence and unconstitutional means. opposed the alleged foreign interference saying, "Some foreign
elements are trying to save the corrupt government." Communists

from entering Singha Durbar Monday. NEPSE index slips another 5.82 points Kathmandu, April 15: The NEPSE index slipped by another 5.82 points at the end of five-day trading Friday. Trading opened at 374.87 points Monday and closed at 369.05 points Friday as the bearish trend continued in the stock market. Commercial bank index tumbled nearly from 479.39 to 408.74 points during the week. Share prices of insurance and finance companies also tumbled as indices of hotels and trading groups recorded slight increases. Altogether 118,694 shares of 42 companies valued at Rs 40.96 million exchanged hands, up from Rs 31.58 million the previous week. peace, security Pakistani diplomat declared “persona non grata” Kathmandu, April 14: His Majesty’s Government declared the First Secretary of the Pakistani Embassy Mohammad Arshad Cheema persona non grata and asked him to leave Nepal within 24 hours, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. This move came following the police seizure of 16 kg of explosives (RDX) from the house the Pakistani diplomat was renting in New Baneshore. The Ministry statement said that Cheema’s activities were incompatible with diplomatic duties and inconsistent with the Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations. The Pakistani Embassy in Kathmandu has however denied the charges against Cheema saying “they were fabricated”. Nepalnews.com/yl/at Maoists rob bank in Solukhumbu Kathmandu, April 13: Maoist rebels robbed a bank in Newa Village Development Committee of Solukhumbu district and fled with Rs 3.75 million in cash as well as gold and silver and some arms and ammunition Thursday night, police said. Rebels attacked the branch office of Nepal Banijya Bank in the village at about 11:30 Thursday night, seized the weapons from the security guards, took the keys from the cashier and fled with cash, gold and silver. A team of policemen who were in duty to protect the bank had already fled fearing the Maoist attack. No casualties were reported. Rebels also took away weapons and ammunitions from the security guards. A bank official said police only reached the spot on Friday. The Nepali rupee depreciated by 25 paisa in a day against the American dollar. The exchange rate against the dollar fell because of the declining rate of the Indian rupee against the American currency. Nepal’s rupee is fixed to the Indian rupee while it is floated with convertible currencies. Nepalnews.com/br/at Pakistani diplomat still in capital Kathmandu, April 13: The First Secretary of the Pakistani Embassy Mohammad Arshad and his wife missed their flight home Friday after being nabbed by security officials in an explosive raid in the capital a day earlier. Police found 16kg of explosive at an apartment in New Baneshore rented by the Pakistani diplomats. The Pakistan embassy meanwhile released a statement saying, "The detention constitutes a clear violation of the Vienna Convention and the adherence to its provisions." Sources said the visitors from the embassy have been allowed access to the detained diplomat.
