Kathmandu, April 30: A group of students abducted a passenger bus and burned it in Kathmandu Monday in protest against what they called maltreatment to a student of Amrit Science College by the driver and helper of the bus. Students loyal to All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), student wing of Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist-Leninist), abducted the bus bearing registration No 3633 from Kalanki, took it in front of Amrit Science College in Lainchor and burnt the bus. Police said the bus was only partially damaged as the fire brigade reached in time and put out the fire. However the bus owner and driver said the bus was completely damaged. According to ANNFSU sources, the bus driver and conductor (helper) denied 33 per cent concession to students, which was agreed with the government, and also misbehaved with the students. ANNFSU launched a protest in Kathmandu demanding 50 per cent concession to students in all short and long route buses and other modes of public transport. An agreement was reached between the representatives of students and government to give 33 per cent concession. Owners of private vehicles have however refused to give the concession. Similarly, ANNFSU students locked the central office of Safa Tempo Association to protest against their decision not to give students any concession. Nepalnews.com/yl/at Body of Babu Chiri Sherpa retrieved Kathmandu, April 30: The body of famed mountain climber Babu Chiri Sherpa was retrieved Monday from the second camp site on Mount Everest Monday for evacuation by helicopter to the capital possibly Tuesday, the Ministry of Tourism said. Babu Chiri fell 200 meters into a crevasse at his camp site, 6,200 meters high at 4 PM Sunday, the Ministry said. Colleagues of the Kathmandu metropolitan expedition led by Ramesh Man Dangol and 12 other teams on the 8848 meters world's tallest peak located the accident site eight hours later. Climbers are attempting to bring down Babu's body to base camp Monday by negotiating the treacherous Khumbu Icefall. Babu Chiri, a
father of six daughters hailed from Taksindu village in Solokhumbu
district; one of his daughters has died. Besides his exploits on Everest
mentioned in the Guiness Book of World Records, Babu climbed the 8586
meters high Kangchenjunga, the worldss third tallest peak, with Russians
in 1989. He also scaled the 8000 plus meters Sisha Pangma in Tibet twice
and the 8201 meters high Cho Oyu on the Nepal Tibet border six times.
The sherpa climbed Everest from the
Kathmandu, April 30: The
famous mountaineer Babu Chiri Sherpa, who climbed Mt. Everest ten times,
died Sunday nightafter falling into a crevasse near Camp 2, normally two
days walk from Everest Base Camp. Camp 2 lies at a height of 6350m and
is criss-crossed with crevasses. According to family sources Babu Chiri
was taking pictures alone at around 4pm when he went missing. It was
only at Babu Chiri holds the record for the fastest ascent of Mt Everest-16 hrs 56 minutes-and has also stayed on the top for 21 hrs. Among his ten ascents up the world's highest mountain he has twice done it from the Tibetan side. Babu's manager said the body could not be brought to the capital today due to bad weather conditions in the region. The body will be brought here by tomorrow morning and placed in the Sherpa Gompa in Baudha for the public to offer their last respects to the great mountaineer. two weeks. 6 killed in bus mishap in Jhapa Kathmandu, April 30: Six people were killed, three on the spot and three on way to the hospital, when two passenger buses collided in Maidhar, Jhapa district, about 500 km east of Kathmandu, Sunday. According to police in Damak, a passenger bus heading towards Kakarvitta from Itahari collided with another passenger bus coming from Jhapa. 68 passengers were injured, 12 of them seriously. The seriously injured are undergoing treatment in hospitals in Dharan and Damak. Those with minor injuries returned home after primary treatment. Police have taken the drivers into custody and initiated action against them. Nepalnews.com/yl/at Bir Hospital nurses return to work Kathmandu, April 30: Nurses in Bir Hospital, who were on strike for the last five days demanding increase in pay and perks, called the strike off and returned to duty following an agreement with the hospital management late Sunday night. The service in the country’s oldest and largest hospital had been paralysed for the last five days due to the strike. Nurses had been demanding an increase in salary and additional allowances for work in odd hours. A nurse in Bir Hospital said that they returned to work as the hospital management agreed to fulfil some of their demands immediately and some later. Nepalnews.com/yl/at Maoist rebels abduct school headmaster Kathmandu, April 30: Maoists abducted a school headmaster from the class in Dhading, about 100 km west of Kathmandu, Sunday, police said. A group of Maoist rebels came to Mahendra Secondary School in Dhadingbesi around 11am Sunday and abducted the headmaster of the school Dhurba Prasad Rijal. Police said Rijal was teaching in the class when the Maoists grabbed him. Students and teachers said the rebels first tied Rijal's hands with an iron chain and led him to away. Before leaving the school, the abductors said they were Maoist rebels and had abducted the headmaster as he acted against the "revolutionary people". Police have initiated a search operation to find the headmaster, however his whereabouts is not yet known. Crown

Nepal, Bhutan to intensify refugee verification process Kathmandu, April 29: Nepal and Bhutan will hold a ministerial meeting to discuss speeding up the identification of 100,000 Bhutanese refugees living in UNHCR administered camps in Jhapa and Morang districts in east Nepal, Foreign Minister Chakra Bastola said Saturday. The two Himalayan states for the first time started the identification process this year after nearly 10 years of failed talks launch the verification process. The start of the verification is " itself a great achievement," Bastola reportedly told journalists. " Given the experience we have gained so far for resolving the problem, Nepal has made up its mind to discuss further with Bhutan and additional teams may be formed," Bastola said. Five officials each from the two countries are verifying the status of the refugees. One estimate said it will take 10 years to complete verification at the current pace.
