Machindranath journey starts Saturday

Kathmandu, May 18: The Red Machindranath will be pulled to Jawalakhel from Iti Tol in Lalitpur Saturday after a team of astrologers found an auspicious date. The Bhoto or the vest, according to tradition, is displayed on the fourth day of the chariot's arrival at Jawalakhel. For the first time there will be no public holiday in the capital when the vest in being displayed as part of a government policy to reduce the number of public holidays. The festival heralds the beginning of the rainy season. The date was fixed by a team of astrologers headed by Kirti Bhara Joshi. nepalnews.com br


22 Kilos of refined hash recovered at airport

Kathmandu, May 18: In the biggest haul in two years, police recovered 22 kilos of refined hash concealed in a consignment of carpets being exported to Germany Thursday at Kathmandu International Airport. The illegal export was found at the Airport godown. There were 100 carpets in
the consignment. The exporter was Lord Buddha Export Company. Police have not made any arrests so far. nepalnews.com br


Thugs loot jewellery shop in capital

Kathmandu, May 18: Even as police stepped up a drive to nab thugs in the capital, a group of thieve as looted Rs. 1.5 million in cash and kind from a shop in New Road Thursday afternoon, police and eyewitnesses said. The group targeted the shop of Sanjaya Aggrawal in the heart of the
city. The thieves cut off the shop's telephone connection before the raid. The thugs broke open into the shop, locked up employees in a room and decamped with cash, jewellery and other goods. nepalnews.com br


Private schools to reopen from Monday

Kathmandu, May 18: Private boarding schools are to be reopened from Monday following a tripartite agreement reached among representatives of government, private schools and student leaders. Private boarding schools all over the country were closed for a week at the call of Maoist students' wing the All Nepal National Free Students Union (Revolutionary). The ANNFSU(R), called a one-week nation wide closure of private boarding schools demanding reduction of fees by 50 per cent, among others.

Representatives of government, private schools and the ANNFSU(R) agreed late Thursday that the report of a high level panel formed to study the demands of Maoist students and other aspects of schools would be implemented in order to solve the problems in the education sector. Central president of Maoist student organisation Devendra Parajuli said that if the report of the panel was not implemented, we would continue our protest. Following the threat of Maoist students to close the school for a week, the government formed a five member high-level panel to study the demands and other different aspects of schools and report to the government with necessary recommendation. Maoist students had threatened to close down more than 10,000 private boarding schools all over the country for an indefinite period unless their demands were met. Private boarding schools have refused to reduce fees by 50 per cent. However, they have now agreed to adjust the fees based on the report of the high level panel. Nepalnews.com/yl/at


Maoists blow up police posts

Kathmandu, May 17:
Nobody was injured when Maoists blew up two police posts in Morang and Sunsari districts Wednesday night. Windowpanes at Ithari were shattered and insurgents set off two explosions at Kerabari in Morang. NEPSE index again slips

Kathmandu, May 17:
In a continuing bearish trend, the NEPSE index fell another 3.04 points Thursday. Trading closed at 329.8 points Thursday as share prices continue to fall for the third consecutive day. Share prices fell by seven points Tuesday and a further 11 points Wednesday.
Tumbling share prices of commercial bank has contributed to the fall. Last week more than 60 percent of the total shares traded were of commercial banks. Analysts expect share prices to fall further. nepalnews.com br


China gives food passage

Kathmandu, May 17: China gave passage for 200 metric tons of grain for the starving population of the isolated district of Humla in far west Nepal through Tibet Wednesday, the World Food Programme (WFP) said. The Chinese gesture reduces transport costs. The WFP is sending food supplies to the district under a work-for-food programme to construct a road. 

The WFP plans to seek an extension of the transport clearance granted for an initial year. nepalnews.com br


Six Gurkhas detained in Belize

Kathmandu, May 17: Six British Gurkhas have been detained in the central American state of Belize for questioning following the death of a 14-year-old boy after a brawl, BBC reported. The incident occurred outside a club in Belize City Thursday. The Nepali soldiers with the 2nd Parachute Regiment based in Essex were on a six-week exercise in jungle warfare and were scheduled to return to base Saturday. nepalnews.com br


Cricket team for ICC Trophy selected

Kathmandu, May 17: The final Nepali squad for the upcoming International Cricket Council trophy tournament was announced Wednesday. The team includes: Captain Raju Khadka, Vice-captain Ganesh Bahadur Shahi, Jaya Prakash Sarraf, Dipendra Chaudhari, Binod Das, Sanjam Regmi, Birendra Bikram Shah, Kiran Agrawal, Paras Lunia, Raj Kumar Pradhan, Paresh Lohini, Kush Gurung, Mehboob Aalam and Munik Shrestha. Reserves are: Sandeep Shrestha, Manoj Katuwal, Aamir Akthhar and Durga Sen. A National Sports Council selection committee headed by Resham Guruing picked the team.nepalnews.com br


Tax officials seal hotel, business firm

Kathmandu, May 16:
Tax officials sealed a hotel, restaurant and business firm for evading taxes for months. A team of tax officials sealed off Durbar Hotel, Maharaja Restaurant and Chirag Foam Industry in Kathmandu Wednesday, the Value Added Tax (VAT) office said. VAT office said that those enterprises evaded both value added tax and income tax worth millions of rupees. NEPSE index falls further 11 points

Kathmandu, May 16: The NEPSE Index fell another 11 plus percentage points Wednesday in a continuing bearish trend in the Nepali stock market. Share values dropped by seven percentage points the previous day. The fall in share prices is largely the result of a decline in value of commercial bank shares; last week more than 60 percent of the total shares traded were of commercial banks. nepalnews.com br


Two killed, four injured in bus accident

Kathmandu, May 16:
Two bystanders were killed and four others were seriously injured Wednesday when an unlicensed driver ran over a group of people at Gongobu bas park in the capital Wednesday morning. The injured are undergoing treatment at the Teaching Hospital. The accident raised tensions at the bus terminal. nepalnews.com br


Iranians climb Makalu

Kathmandu, May 16:
Seven Iranian newcomers to the Nepal Himalaya, one Italian and two Sherpa guides scaled the 8463 meters high Mount Makalu high Sunday, the Ministry of Tourism said Wednesday. The Iranians were the fourth expedition to climb the world's fifth tallest peak through the normal north east ridge in the last three days during the current spring climbing season that ends May 31. The Iran Mountaineering Federation expedition was led by Sadegh Aghajani Kalkhopran.

China to consider third road link with Nepal and Tibet

Kathmandu, May 16: China will consider the construction of the third highway linking Nepal and Tibet after the completion of Syprubesi-Rasuwaghadi highway, an announcement said Wednesday. China said it will "positively consider" extending the Baglung Beni Highway to Jomsom to link Mustang adjoining Tibet.

China agreed to construct 19 kms of the Syprubesi-Rasuwagadhi highway-the second road link between Nepal and Tibet during the just concluded visit of Chinese Prime Minister Zhu Rongji. Zhu called for "press, progress and stability" in Nepal. Zhu flew to Maldives Wednesday after concluding a three-day official visit of Nepal; Zhu will also visit Sri Lanka and Thailand.

China will send a study team to Nepal to increase imports to reduce the wide Rs.12 billion trade gap in China's favour, a three-page press statement released after the visit said. Nepal urged Chinese investments in the industrial and tourism sectors. China  has agreed "in principle" to allow Nepal to open a consulate in Shanghai, the statement said. China agreed "to give positive consideration"  to a Nepali request to renew visa on arrival facility for Nepalis withdrawn by Hong Kong last year after widespread abuse, the announcement said. Zhu's visit  will take "bilateral relationship into the new millennium with more co-operation and closer understanding," the statement said.

Four policemen injured

Kathmandu, May 16: Four policemen were injured when a booby trap set by Maoists went off at Hangdev village in Sankhuwasabha district Tuesday. A police patrol was returning to base when the incident happened. Insurgents completely destroyed a police post in a bomb attack at Pokhari in the sate district Tuesday, police said. There were no police casualties as they were away on patrol.
