Crown Princess gives birth to son

"By the grace of God, the first baby boy was born to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Paras Bir Bikram Shah Dev and Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Himani Rajya Laxmi Devi Shah," a Royal Palace communiqué said. The Crown Princess gave birth at 12:49 pm by caesarian section.

The Crown Princess and the new born Prince are doing well, the Royal Palace communiqué further stated. The baby weighed 3.34 kgs. 

The new Prince is second in line of succession to the Throne. Princess Purnika is their first child. The Crown Prince and Crown Princess married in January 2000.

36th FNCCI general convention kicks off

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba inaugurated the 36th annual general convention of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) in Kathmandu on Tuesday. 

Prime Minister Deuba expressed his commitment to improve the security situation and establishment of law and order in the country in his inaugural speech. 

At the occasion FNCCI President Ravi Bhakta Shrestha highlighted the problems faced by the business community in the present situation. He also handed over a check of Rs.1,111,101 to the Prime Minister for the Flood and Landslide Relief Fund.

HM's birthday observed

The 56th birthday of King Gyanendra was solemnized at the Royal Palace Monday according to Hindu Vedic tradition. Buddhist monks at Anandakuti Vihar conducted the Mahaparitaran Paath for the health and long life of the King.

Inflation down to 3 percent

Inflation in the first 11 months of last fiscal year 2001/02 dipped to 3 percent from 3.5 percent compared to the same period the previous year. Total exports fell 12.7 percent to Rs. 44.32 billion and imports declined 8.1 percent to Rs.96.88 billion.

Trade deficit fell 3.5 percent to Rs. 52.56 billion. Foreign exchange reserve declined marginally 0.1 percent to Rs.103.5 billion until mid June 2002 but was still enough to finance imports for one year; 73 percent of the reserve was in convertible currencies compared to 77 percent the previous year. 

Total government expenditure increased by only 4.1 percent to Rs.57.95 billion compared to a 18.3 percent rise during the same period the previous year; regular expenditure increased 10.2 percent to Rs.40.56 billion to meet heightened security needs.

Development expenditure fell 11.4 percent to Rs.15.83 billion compared to a rise of 13.6 percent the previous year. Revenue collection increased 2.4 percent to Rs.42.14 billion. Budget deficit increased  0.6 percent to Rs.11.33 billion; the deficit was financed by foreign cash loan of Rs.3.39 billion, development bond issues totaling Rs.3.87 billion, treasury bills of Rs.1.5 billion and Citizen Saving Certificates totaling Rs.628 million. 

The government withdrew Rs.1.99 billion in overdraft  from Nepal Rashtra Bank to meet the remaining deficit. nepalnews.com br July 30

Chudamani Sharma surrendered to security forces at Balaju overnight, the Defence Ministry said. He is the senior maoist rebel to surrender after the emergency was slapped on November 26 last year.

Koirala, second Nepali to win Magsaysay Award

Senior journalist and the founder of Nepal Press Institute (NPI) Bharat Dutta Koirala has won this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awards, the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

Koirala is among six Asians who have been given the award. The award in journalism has been presented to Koirala in recognition of his contribution to the development of mass media in Nepal.

“I am extremely overjoyed, this is an honour for both the country and the media,” Koirala said. He is the second Nepali to receive the award after Mahesh Chandra Regmi who bagged the Magsaysay Award in 1977 for journalism, literature and creative and communication arts.

Attorney General cites security reasons for not calling local body elections

Attorney General and the government’s chief legal advisor Prem Bahadur Bista said Monday that the government did not announce the elections to the local bodies as the security situation is not favourable. 

Pleading on behalf of the government on the writ petition seeking the extension of the term of local bodies Bista said it would be difficult to hold the local elections when the security situation is posing challenges to hold even the mid term elections to the House of Representatives. 

He said as the prevailing situation is not favourable to hold the local elections the government decided to run the local bodies with the help of the government employees deployed in the districts, he said.  

Pleading on behalf of the petitioners, former Speaker and senior advocate Daman Nath Dhungana said the term of the local bodies must be extended since they cannot be left without the peoples’ representatives. 

Similarly another senior advocate Basudev Dhungana said others cannot be recruited in the posts meant for the local representatives. “No other method of running the local bodies can ever represent the people,” he said. nepalnews.com am July 30


NWO sides with PM Deuba

The majority members of the central committee of the Nepal Women's Organization (NWO), the female wing of the Nepali Congress, Monday supported the rival party led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba following a split in the ruling party, an announcement said. 

Fourteen out of 23 members of the central committee, including chairperson Uma Adhikari and general secretary Pushpa Bhusal supported the Deuba Congress. 

The rival Koirala Congress immediately dissolved the central committee for supporting Deuba who has been expelled from the party, a statement said. 

Earlier, a majority in the Nepal Tarun Dal leadership led by Bal Krishna Khand, a youth wing of the party, also supported Deuba. nepalnews.com br July 29


Aryal appointed NDC secretary 

Prime Minster and Defence Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba Monday administered the oath of secrecy to Madan Prasad Aryal, Secretary of the newly formed National Defence Council (NDC) secretariat, the Defence Ministry said. Aryal is also Defence Secretary. 

Chief of Staff Gen. Prajwalla SJB Rana was present on the occasion. The King mobilizes the army on the recommendation of the Council consisting of the Prime Minister, Defence Minister and the Chief of the Army Staff. nepalnews.com br July 29


Three Maoists killed

The army shot dead three Maoists in continuing operations in Baitadi and Pyuthan Sunday, the Defence Ministry said Monday. The army shot dead two rebels extorting money from bus passengers in Khodpe in Baitadi, the Ministry said. 

Security forces recovered arms, socket bombs and explosives from the insurgents. The army shot dead an unidentified rebel in Pyuthan Sunday. 

Sixteen rebels surrendered to local authorities in Nuwakot Sunday, local officials said. nepalnews.com br July 29


Floods, landslides kill five more persons: Home Ministry

An official Home Ministry report Monday said five more persons were killed by floods and landslides in Kaski and Udaipur raising the death toll to 242 in the most recent natural disaster since last Sunday in at least 30 of the kingdom's 75 administrative districts. 

A landslide in Tehrathum Sunday killed four persons, injured six others while five others are missing, local officials said. Floods and landslides have killed three persons in Panchthar and Kavre Sunday, officials said. 

Nobody was injured when a landslide swept away 12 houses displacing 14 families at Khandbari in Sankhuwasabha overnight. The district headquarters is without water after the mudslide partially washed away the drinking water system, local officials said. nepalnews.com br July 29


Samyog appointed whip

Prime Minister and leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party Sher Bahadur Deuba Monday appointed Sukra Raj Samyog whip of the party in the National Assembly, the upper chamber of parliament, an announcement said. 

The Assembly is a permanent body although Deuba has dissolved the House of Representatives, the powerful lower chamber. Snap polls are being held November 13. nepalnews.com br July 29


Four idols stolen from Pashupati area

Four idols belonging to the Bhandari family living in the Pashupati area were stolen from their house Saturday night drawing the Pashupati Area Development Trust into a controversy. 

After the Pashupati Area Development Trust started the demolition of houses in the area in order to implement its Master Plan, the house of the Bhandaris containing the four idols stolen Saturday was among the few houses that were spared. 

The Bhandari family was forced to leave the house but had to leave the idols behind. To their dismay they found the idols missing when they went to their old house for worship.  

The local people have been alleging that the Trust could have taken the idols away in order to take  ahead the demolition drive. nepalnews.com am July 29


Rewanta Kumari Acharya dead

Rewanta Kumari Acharya, the widow of late prime minister Tanka Prasad Acharya, died Sunday. She was 85. 

She was suffering a heart ailment. She was chairperson of Adarsha Mahila Sangh, the first Nepali women organization. She took part in the general convention of the Nepali Congress in Banaras in 2003 BS.
