NHRC calls on Maoists to respect peoples’ right to vote: other details The National Human Rights Commission Thursday appealed to the government to create the congenial atmosphere for holding the mid-term elections on November 13 in a free, fair and impartial manner. The Commission also called on the Maoists to work towards creating a peaceful atmosphere and to respect the peoples’ right to participate in the elections. Speaking at a press conference organized at Lalitpur to mark the completion of two years of the Commission’s inception, Commission Chairman Nain Bahadur Khatri said the Maoists had been violating human rights by killing innocent people. He also called on the Maoists to stop such killings. Two Maoists were gunned down in Hegra area of Rautahat district while one was killed in Mewa tole of the same district. Similarly one terrorist each was shot dead in Sathakhani of Surkhet district and Rayal area of Bajhang district. According to the Defence Ministry press release, the security forces arrested seven Maoist suspects in Rautahat district and are conducting the necessary investigations. The security forces recovered a bucket bomb weighing eight Kgs, explosives, pistols and equipment used for making booby traps from the site where the encounters took place. Meanwhile one army officer was killed in Majthana of Kaski district Wednesday while fighting with the armed terrorists who unleashed an unprecedented attack. One other soldier who was injured severely in a booby trap laid by the Maoists in Baunne area of Kailali district six days back died Thursday while undergoing treatment at the hospital. The terrorists who were badly shaken due to the operations of the security forces in the Rayal area of Bajhang district one week ago, kidnapped a local resident of the Kailash Pimi village of the same district Wednesday and hanged him to death. A group of armed Maoists blasted the house of Nepali Congress Area Chairman Kul Bahadur Khatri situated in Nibuwa, ward no:4 of Kohalpur Wednesday. The Maoists murdered Khatri’s son Chop Bahadur Khatri and Bhoj Bahadur Chand, an employee of the Nepalgunj Forest Development Project after torturing them severely. The Maoist shot dead two low level officials if Nibuwa VDC on charges of spying on their activities. Two others who were also shot by the terrorists have been wounded severely. The terrorists have abducted a woman and some others from the same VDC. nepalnews.com am/rh June 6 Congress central leadership files writ petition for House restoration The Nepali Congress central leadership filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court Wednesday seeking the restoration of the House of Representatives. The writ filed by the General Secretary of the party Sushil Koirala along with 56 other former legislators has claimed that the House dissolution carried out by the Prime Minister and the announcement of mid-term elections is unconstitutional. The filing of the writ coincided with the appeal made by King Gyanendra to all the concerned bodies and the people to come forward and make the elections scheduled for November 13 a success. In the writ the Prime Minister has been charged of crossing the confinements of the rights given to him by recommending for the snap polls without getting it endorsed by the cabinet meeting. The injured are being treated at the Shree Memorial Hospital, according to the police. The Commission has also informed that the election code of conduct has been in force and information has been given to concerned bodies including the government. The Ministry officially confirmed a joint security patrol killed six rebels in Changunarayan in Kathmandu Valley Tuesday morning. The rebels were involved in terrorist activities in Bhaktapur and neighbouring Kavre. Five rebels were killed in Dailekh Sunday and one in Syangjha Monday, an official announcement said. Fifteen more bodies of rebels killed in Rukum last month were recovered in neighbouring Salayan district Monday raising the rebel death toll to 218 in the biggest reverse suffered by rebels since November last month. Rebels killed three civilians, including a couple and an employee of Plan International, an INGO, is Bhajang Monday, the Ministry said.
