Nepali youths in dire need of reproductive health education: report The Family Health International (FHI) in its report released Tuesday has highlighted the need expressed by youths in the age group 10-24, to step up sex education and reproductive health education in Nepal. Despite the widely felt need for information on reproductive health and sex, young Nepalese have few sources of information, the report says. The FHI prepared the report with the support of USAID-Nepal after conducting interviews of 556 youths living in the rural as well as urban parts of Nepal. According to the report, the adolescents in Nepal are opting for fewer children than their elders. They at the same time feel that they have the control over the decision as to how many children they should have. Parents seem to have a great deal of influence on the timing of the first birth soon after marriage. Parents also exert control over the care of pregnant wives. But the status of daughter-in-law is so low and resources so scarce in many Nepali households that she and her baby may not get enough to eat, the report says. Young adults in Nepal recognize that child bearing at an early stage can have harmful consequences for mothers and children alike. They believe that waiting until they are older to marry will help prevent some of these problems and allow them the maturity they need to take care of their family, according to the report. The report points out that the greatest obstacles hindering the improvement of adolescent reproductive health in Nepal are poverty and gender inequality. These problems will not be eradicated soon, but it is still necessary to acknowledge them as critical factors and to try to develop programmes that will not perpetuate them, the report says. nepalnews.com, am Mar 20 Nash appointed British ambassador to Afghanistan Ronald Nash has been transferred to Afghanistan as Great Britain's first ambassador to the war-torn nation since the Soviet invasion in 1979, an announcement said.
