Heavy casualties feared in clashes Heavy casualties on both sides are feared in the second clash in 24 hours between Maoists and security forces in Argakachi district headquarters overnight, security forces said Monday. At least 125 security personnel (civil police and army) and 25 civilian were killed in Sandhikharka, the district headquarters of Arghakhachi, a police source said. Thousands of rebels attacked an army barrack, the office of the armed police and the civilian district post post of the civilian police. Rebels began the attack at 10 PM Sunday night and the fighting continued until 4 AM Monday, security sources said. Police are trying to establish communications in Sandhikharka. The Maoists destroyed the telecommunications tower in the district, hence the lack of communications, security forces said. All government offices were destroyed in the attack. Maoists have kidnapped some police and army personnel, a security source said. There are dead bodies of Maoist rebels in the site but the number of their casualties is not yet clear. Security forces Monday launched counterattack against the rebels in an around Sandikarkha, security forces said. Twenty-one injured have been evacuated by helicopter to Pokhara and Kathmandu for treatment. Casualty figures were not immediately available, but suspected to be very high. A police officer in Police Headquarters said the fighting continued till Monday morning and the number of the casualties will be more than 100. The Maoists attacked around 10 PM last night and the district lost communications 3 AM, he said. The Royal Nepal Army had sent a night vision helicopter last night but is was unable to help the ground forces at the district headquarters. Police and army reinforcements have reached the clash site, Home Ministry spokesman Gopendra Bahadur Pandey said. He did not have any casualty figures. Police found two dead bodies of Maoists in the clash site but their casualties is much higher. Minister of State for Home Devendra Raj Kandel who visited the clash site with Inspector General of Police Pradeep SJB Rana said 70 Maoists are feared dead. Around a 1000 to 1100 Maoists were involved in the attack, Kandel said. He also added most of the policemen were from the civil police force. Army and police are conducting search and blocking operations in the area. Maoists were taking their dead till the morning hours, police said. The fighting last over 5 hours. The Home Ministry confirmed that Inspector Krishna Bahadur Shrestha, one Sub-Inspector, three Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 13 head Constables and 31 Constables of the Police were killed in the brutal attack. Many of the policemen was shot dead after they were captured, the Home Ministry said. The injured policemen were airlifted to Kathmandu this afternoon. Five policemen are in serious condition, the Home Ministry said. Maoists completely destroyed the police post and took some weapons from the Bhiman Police post, the Home Ministry said. Some injured policemen have also been taken to Janakpur, the Ministry said. Police said that Maoists blocked the road to the police post from the district headquarters and planted landmines to prevent reinforcements from reaching there early. Four other policemen, two in Udayapur and two in Rupandehi sustained bullet wounds following attacks by Maoist terrorists. The terrorists who had come in bicycles shot dead soldier Khagendra Limbu of the Royal Nepal Army at 3:45 pm. Limbu was in his civil outfit and was patrolling in and around Sauraha Chowk in Chitwan district. The army was able to identify Limbu only in the evening. Similarly, terrorists shot dead Sundar Singh Samanta, a police constable posted at Khaireni police post in Rupandehi district. When the terrorists opened fire on Samanta who was five hundred meters away from the police post, another policeman Uttam Thapa was also been injured. Thapa has been airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. Another police recruit Chandra Narayan Chaudhary was severely injured when the Maoist opened fire near the DN Gate in Gainghat.
