The historic "Annantapur" temple situated in Swayambhu, a UNESCO world heritage site has been damaged after fire broke out last night. Firefighters, Nepal army and police personnel were trying to control the fire till Tuesday morning. The cause of the fire is still unknown but chief of Juddha Barun Yantra, the Fire Fighting Brigade of Lalitpur told Nepalnews that the cause might be the oil lamps offered at the evening prayers. He said the temple was made of wood and other fire sensitive materials, which was making it difficult to control the fire. The tiger has killed four cows and six buffaloes at ward numbers 1, 8 and 9 of Shailungeshwor VDC within two weeks and has spread panick among the local people at Phasku VDC. An outbreak of kala-azar fever has surfaced in Sarlahi district, RSS reported Tuesday. According to Trichandra Hospital, Malangawa, 10 of the 17 kala-azar patients hospitalised there are children and one or two new cases among children are coming to the hospital every day.Kala-azar has spread in more than 65 VDCs of the district. The one-way traffic in the highway became possible after the Road Department technicians and staff made a temporary road along the riverbank. "More than 60 vehicles have crossed the road since Monday afternoon," said head constable of police Ram Bahadur Shrestha. nepalnews.com mr Aug. 5 Rebels abduct 8, attack police post In three different incidents, Maoists abducted seven in Udaypur, one in Dolakha and hurled hand grenades at the District Police Office Ramechhap injuring three, published reports said Tuesday. A group of rebels kidnapped seven villagers from Gaighat, Udaypur Sunday evening. One of the kidnapped villagers is named Shivji Rai; names and surnames of the rest are not known. In Ghyang Sukathor VDC-1 of Dolakha, the rebels kidnapped police constable Gajendra Karki, who was on his way to home on a few days' leave. In Ramechhap, guerrillas late Monday evening hurled hand grenades at the District Police Office seriously injuring three security personnel. Eyewitnesses said the attackers immediately disappeared after the incident. An army chopper airlifted the injured police to a Kathmandu hospital. nepalnews.com mr Aug 5 Demotion to freed Maoist leaders For leaking rebel-related information, three Maoist leaders, whom the government freed from jails to make conducive environment for talks, have received demotions inside the party, a published report said Tuesday. "Among the three, Mumaram Khanal was already suspended from the party before he was released from jail," a news report in Nepal Samacharpatra said Tuesday. "Politburo member Rabindra Shrestha and central member Bamdev Chhetri have only been demoted." Shrestha has been demoted to central member and Chhetri to regional bureau in-charge, the report said. In accordance with the Maoist demand, government released the three from different jails last week. nepalnews.com mr Aug. 5 Changes recommended in judiciary A six-member committee, constituted to study possible reforms in the judiciary, has forwarded a report to the Prime Minister recommending several changes in the courts, published reports said Tuesday. Secretary at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Uday Nepali Shrestha chaired the committee formed during Sher Bahadur Deuba's second premiership. "We studied possible reforms dividing all former suggestions of judicial reforms into five categories," said Dr. Ram Krishna Timilsina, a committee member, after submission of the report Monday. Providing the right to hear "habeas corpus" writs to the district courts, amendment to the present Civil Code (Muluki Ain), training to judges and regular study of the functioning of the courts were some of the recommendations. Other suggestions included separate Law on Limitation, simplification of procedural law and lowering the case-burden of the Supreme Court, among others. nepalnews.com Aug. 5 Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala - one time fierce rival of "retired" leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai - said Monday he would have no objection if the King appoints Bhattarai the next Prime Minister. "If NC founding member Kishunji becomes the constitutional Prime Minister, there is no objection," Koirala said in a press meet Monday. "At a time when Congress is proposing CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal, it will be a matter of pride if Kishunji becomes the PM," he said. Former PM Koirala, however, expressed skepticism over the King's role and said, "I am fully alert with the fact that Kishunji's name as the next PM has come after the King granted audience to him. It may a trick of the palace to divide parties." On his possibility to be the next PM, Koirala said he has no such desire now. "I now have no willingness, ambition and greediness to be the PM. The post of PM is not a big matter to me." "Defence Ministry wants to bring armed police under it, but the Home Ministry says the armed police should continue to remain under it," a news report in Rajdhani daily said. Armed police chief Sahabir Thapa Monday met Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa and said the semi-military force should not be merged into the army. "Security arrangement will go worse and morale of security personnel will decrease if the merger plan succeeds," armed police chief told PM Thapa, according to the report. A meeting of Security Council during former PM Lokendra Bahadur Chand' tenure, had decided the merger. "We don't have any information that the Home Ministry has rejected the latest decision taken on the armed police," spokesman of Defence Ministry Bhudendra Paudel said. Meanwhile, Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala Monday said the dissolution of armed police into the army would lead the nation towards "militarization". nepalnews.com mr Aug 5 Kathmandu Hospitals have been undergoing acute shortage of oxygen due to the rain-obstructed road traffic in the highways, published reports said Tuesday. Bhaju Ratna Company, Kanti Bal Hospital and TU Teaching Hospital have been supplying oxygen to the private and government hospitals of the valley. The cabinet has directed all concerned authority to continue oxygen supply, reports said. Some oxygen cylinders were brought to the valley in helicopters.
