"We are fully confident that RBB will be in profit from next year," Basudev Ram Joshi, RBB Chairman and a member of the new management team, told journalists present at press meet Monday. Justifying his arguments, Joshi said the ailing RBB was running under losses of Rs.1.22 billion in the fiscal year 2058/059 B.S. "We managed to lower the losses to 730 million in the fiscal year 2059/060 B.S." As a matter of pride, the new team further managed to reduce the losses just to Rs.20 million in the first three months of the current fiscal year (2060/2061), Joshi said. "If this trend and improvement continues, RBB will soon regain its glorious position, which it used to enjoy in the past," he said. Bruce Anderson, Chief Executive Officer of the bank, said the new team has been launching massive reforms to revive the bank. "Through transparency and our highly spirited team, we are steadily nearing our targets," Anderson said. The RBB has now updated its account and audit reports, which had not been updated for a long time, they said. Meanwhile, a statement, distributed during the press meet, said the RBB had net liabilities in excess of 22 billion rupees and more than 60 percent of its loans were classified as "non-performing", at the time when the new team took over the management of the bank 11 months ago. "During the eleven months under review, Rs.2.3 billion in principal and interest has been recovered from the non-performing loans," said the statement. Downsizing the branches across the country, the RBB is now providing attractive and standard services, it said. "On the basis of our reform programs, we firmly believe that the RBB will soon emerge as a model bank," the statement said. The government, eleven months ago, handed over the management of RBB to private sector aiming at rescuing the almost-collapsed bank. Along with RBB, management of Nepal Bank Limited (NBL) was also handed over to private sector for the same reason. RBB and NBL are Nepal's two largest and oldest commercial banks. nepalnews.com mr Dec 15 |
