Rain, snowfall make life topsy-turvy Sudden winter rains and snowfall has affected life throughout the country, bringing in a cold wave, various reports said Monday. Life has badly been disrupted in Taplejung in far-east Nepal, where the highest snowfall has been recorded in a decade, the reports said. People's movement has come to a halt, 22 schools have been shut down and the snowfall is likely to damage this year's crops in the district, the Rising Nepal said. Neighbouring district Panchthar is also facing the same problem, the daily said. Tourists, especially domestic, at the same time, enjoyed snowfall in the hilly areas nearby Kathmandu, which received snow as high as two feet, other reports said. Hill stations such as Nagarkot, Phulcnowki and Daman are packed with thousands of tourists from Saturday, the day when the light winter shower began, the reports said. The cold wave has brought life in the Terai belt to a standstill, according to the reports. No sunshine has been reported since last two weeks in almost all Terai districts ranging from Jhapa in the east to Mahendranagar in the west, the reports said. News Woman Maoist surrenders in Gorkha A disenchanted woman Maoist, Kholmaya Gurung, 20 recently surrendered to security forces in Lamjung district, published reports said Monday. Gurung joined the Maoists' party in August this year. She escaped after two months of joining the rebel party and returned to home in Bichaura VDC of the district, the reports said. According to her, the Maoists forcefully took her and two of her friends with them while they were collecting fodder in the jungle. News An aircraft of Sita Airlines bound for Kathmandu from Pokhara made an emergency landing at Bharatpur airport, as the windscreen of the Dornier aircraft, 9N-AHB, suddenly began to crack, the Rising Nepal said Monday. It happened just 12 minutes after takeoff from Pokhara airport at 11:15 a.m. with 18 people abroad, the daily said. Captain Nabin Gurung made the emergency landing to avoid a possible accident, the daily quoted Keshav Lamsal, Airport runway officer at Bharatpur, as saying. The fluctuation in the weather's temperature might have caused the screen to crack, Gurung said. It was raining when the plane was flying, the daily said. After making a forced landing at the airport at 11:24 a.m., the passengers were sent to Kathmandu by bus, the daily said. News India expressed hope Saturday that seven South Asian countries would sign a free trade pact during their January 4-6 summit in Pakistan, AFP reported from New Delhi. The three dead were the employees of Himalayan Noodles and were found unconscious in a room inside the factory compound in Basundhara, Dhapasi VDC-9, the reports said. Those who were found dead were identified as Dipesh Tamang, 18, from Sanglekhola, Suman Tamang, 17, from Sarlahi and Buddhi Parja, 18 from Chitwan, the reports said. Jeevan Tamang, 20, from Sanglekhola, was found unconscious, but is reported to be out of danger now after receiving treatment at the Teaching Hospital, according to the reports.
