Signature campaign against King

Top leaders of three opposition parties launched a nation-wide signature campaign at Naya Baneswore in Kathmandu Tuesday to begin a campaign demanding the property of Late King Birendra and King Gyanendra be made public. 

NC President Girija Prasad Koirala, CPN-UML General Secretary Madav Nepal and NSP (Debi) leader Bimal Yadav launched the campaign in the capital. 

NMKP leader Narayanman Bijukakchaya and Amik Serchan of Samyukta Janamorcha launched the national campaign in Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. 

A relay hunger strike against the King also continued for the third consecutive day in the capital Tuesday and the rest of the country. 

Anti-King protest is in its fifth week for his alleged 'regressive actions' since October 4 last year when the monarch sacked Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. nepalnews.com br July 1


Stop hitting schools, says UNICEF

The head of UNICEF in Nepal, Dr. Suomi Sakai, has repeated her call that Nepali children should be declared 'zones of peace' and schools should be free from conflict. 

In a statement Tuesday, Sakai said: "Not even schools have provided a safe haven for children. This is unacceptable." 

A group of parents of Kathmandu children petitioned Sakai to intervene with the government to have schools declared a zone of peace and be liberated from politicisation. 

More than 1.5 million children all over Nepal stayed home for a second day as a nationwide strike called by organisations representing private schools continued Tuesday. 

"We are sick of political parties, student unions and others using schools as their battle ground," said one angry parent, among 100 who picketed the UN Headquarters in Pulchowk Tuesday afternoon. nepalnews.com kd July 1


Australia open for Nepali goods

Australia will from Tuesday provide entirely free access to its markets for the world's 50 poorest nations, fulfilling a promise the government made a year ago, Trade Minister Mark Vaile Said Monday, AFP reported from Sydney. 

Tariffs on goods from 49 LDCs and East Timor will be abolished, as well as quotas on any of their imports. "Now LDCs and East Timor will have duty free access for all products from tomorrow (Tuesday)," Vaile said. 

Exports from Bangladesh are expected to grow between 2.5 and 11 times existing levels, with

Another gold for Shrestha

Amita Shrestha bagged another gold in the 11th Special Olympics Summer World Sports Tournament in the 200m race in the 16 to 21 age category in Dublin Monday, an announcement said. 

Shrestha also won a bronze in the 100m race. Nepal has now bagged five medals in the Special Olympics. nepalnews.com br July 1


Rupee again appreciates

The rupee appreciated by another 25 paise against the dollar Tuesday. Nepal Rashtra Bank fixed Tuesday’s selling rate at Rs.76.12 to the greenback.

Laxmi Bank Ltd. to go public

Securities Exchange Board Monday authorized Birgunj-based Laxmi Bank Ltd. to go public to raise Rs.192.5 million, the Board said.

The Board authorized the Bank to sell 1,925,000 shares with a par value of Rs.100 per share to raise the capital. The Bank will have to go public within two months.

Nepal, Israel Cooperation

Four Israeli medicos will help hone up skills of Nepalis at an 11 day training workshop in co-operation with the Kathmandu University Medical School's Clinical Clerkship Programme in Banepa from Tuesday, an announcement said.

Center for International Cooperation of Israel's Foreign Ministry is cooperating with the University in running the workshop.

This is the third cooperative medical programme between Israel and Nepal to improve medical skills this year. nepalnews.com br July 1


Maoist militant shot at, other details

Two unidentified gunmen shot and seriously injured Maoist militia leader Jung Kumar Gharti at a bus park in Ghorai Monday night, police said.

Gharti is recovering from bullet injuries in the head at Mahendra Hospital in Dang.

Meanwhile, Maoists abducted village secretary Tula Raj Bisata and his neighbour Til Bahadur Shahi and CPN-UML activists Saturday from Pakha village in Jumla, the party said. nepalnews.com br July 1


Mushroom poisoning

One person died and five others of one family of Panauti in Kavre suffered food poisoning after eating wild mushrooms Sunday, police said.

Seven persons of two families of Udipur village in Lamjung also suffered food poisoning, three seriously, after eating wild mushrooms collected form a nearby forest Monday, published reports said.

NBB recovers Rs.900 million loan

In the last months, ailing Nepal Banijya Bank (NBB) has recovered Rs.900 million in loans since management was handed over to a group of consultants, Bank Spokesman Janardhan Acharya told Gorkhapatra.

NBB is Nepal's largest bank. A foreign bank has also taken over the management of Nepal Bank Ltd., Nepal's oldest Bank, to bring it back to profitability.

Government, on the recommendation of the World Bank, handed over the management of its two wholly or partially owned banks to improve management. nepalnews.com br July 1


PM meets RPP leaders

To narrow rift between RPP and government, Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa Monday met RPP President Pashupati SJB Rana with four others, party sources said. 

PM Thapa met Rana along with RPP seniors Rabindra Nath Sharma, Prakash Chandra Lohani and Kamal Thapa.

“The five agreed not to induct anymore ministers from RPP in the cabinet at present,” the source said, adding, “they have agreed to meet once every 15 days.”

PM Thapa said he would continue efforts to gain agitating parties’ support.

Meanwhile, police injured dozens of supporters and three central leaders of NC and UML in a torch rally Monday. The injured were  Subash Chandra Nemwang and Amrit Kumar Bohora from UML and NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula. nepalnews.com mr July 1


School principal murdered

An unidentified gang Monday night brutally murdered Pramita Shrestha Sunuwar, principal of Jyoti Academy, Lalitpur at her own residence at Afaltol, Dhobighat, police said.

A gang of four attacked Sunuwar on the neck and other body parts with “khukuris” while she was dining with family members around 9:00 PM. 

Her husband, Ashok Sunuwar, was immediately rushed to the Patan Hospital after being seriously injured in the attack. His condition is critical, police said.

Police said nearly half a dozen people have been taken into custody for interrogation and seven separate teams have been formed to investigate the crime. nepalnews.com mr July 1


RNAC to be a Joint Venture Company

The government is planning to convert “ailing” Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC) into a joint venture company, Sarbendra Nath Shukla, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, said Tuesday.

“It may take about two years to change the airline into a joint venture company,” Minister Shukla said Tuesday in an interview with The Rising Nepal. “For this, the organization needs to be strengthened and well-equipped.”

RNAC is a government owned corporation, incurring millions in losses. Consistent political interference, scams and overstaffing are said to be the reasons behind the loss. nepalnews.com mr July 1


CIAA grills four ex-ministers

Of the 40 politicians summoned jointly, the CIAA Monday interrogated four former ministers Dhundi Raj Shastri, Hasta Bahadur Malla, Ram Bahadur Gurung and Mohan Bahadur Basnet suspecting corruption, officials said. 

The interrogation was based on the report of Judicial Investigation and Probe Commission on Property. Two former bureaucrats – ex-police chief Pradip SJB Rana and former defense secretary Chakra Bandhu Aryal were also interrogated Monday.

CIAA has already begun initiatives to freeze bank accounts and to have actual information about the business and property of the suspects and their relatives.

Mahalisagar bund complete

Despite repeated requests from Nepal to halt it, India has completed the construction of the controversial Mahalisagar bund, The Kathmandu Post reported Tuesday. 

The bund has been built at Mahali village in Siddharthanagar district in Uttar Pradesh, India. The bund borders Bhagwanpur in Bedauli VDC-9, some ten kilometers from district headquarters Taulihawa (of Kapilvastu district). 

After the completion of the construction, some 400 hectares of land is likely to be submerged and at least 1,000 thousand families are going to be affected, the report said.

“A slight rain last week has already forced the locals to use boats when traveling to the bund site,” added the report. nepalnews.com mr July 1
