Pun rebuffs Kantipur news

Former minister and the erstwhile spokesman of the government talks team Narayan Singh Pun Monday refuted a news item carried by Kantipur Daily, which quoted Maoist Chief peace negotiator Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, RSS reported.

The story was carried by the daily on the basis of what Dr. Bhattarai told a gathering in Gorkha. Pun has refuted the news stating that the King's views were familiarized to the Maoist at the Gokarna resort on May 6 during the meeting of the homework team from both the sides.

He has dismissed the report, which quoted Bhattarai as saying that he and another minister Ramesh Nath Pandey had familiarized the Maoists about the King's views before the second round of talks were held.

In a communiqué, Pun said the use of the Royal Nepal Army is clearly stated in the Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal-1990 and the ill attempts to drag the King into controversy will not be in the interest of the nation.

Pun said such fabricated and unfounded claims coming from no other than the convener of the Maoist talk team at a time when two round of peace talks have already been conducted could dampen the entire process and lead to unwanted problems. nepalnews.com am June 10

The five agitating political parties announced that they would picket around the land revenue and tax offices across the nation Tuesday in their bid to pursue people not to pay taxes at a time when there is no local government, Nepal Samacharpatra reported.

The five political parties said the picketing of the revenue and tax offices under the fourth phase of anti-King protests was only symbolic. "In other countries, the authorities are not allowed to raise local taxes and revenue when there is no local government, we in Nepal want to emulate the same practice," Bharat Mohan Adhikari, coordinator of the central peoples' movement coordination committee said.

He said the aim of the protest is to create awareness amongst the people that they need not pay taxes in a country where they do not have a government that represents them. "The protest also aims to put pressure on the government to hold the local elections," Adhikari said.
