Hillary, 83, was mobbed by journalists and enthusiasts as he disembarked a flight from New Delhi in a wheelchair to participate in the celebrations beginning Sunday.

"The celebrations are very important. It is 50 years since Tenzing and I climbed Everest. The mountain is still difficult to climb in bad weather. It is a magnificent mountain," Hillary said after arrival.

Junko Tabei, the first woman to climb Everest in 1975, arrived in the capital Wednesday to take part in the anniversary celebrations. Altogether 208 foreign and 197 Nepali summiteers have confirmed their
