Helicopter crashes at Everest Base Camp (10:25 AM)

One person died and six were seriously injured in a helicopter crash at Everest Base camp at 10:16 AM Wednesday, officials said.

The Simrik Air helicopter crashed as expeditions were still climbing the mountain. An Army helicopter has taken two seriously injured to Lukla. A rescue helicopter has reached base camp, official sources said. More details are awaited. nepalnews.com rh/br May 28

The helicopter crash marred the fifth day of celebrations to commemorate the conquest of Everest by Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary.

The chopper crashed as Everest heroes and their wives prepared to plant saplings at the International Mountaineering Memorial Park in Kakani.

The helicopter crashed while landing, expedition sources said. The same source said a steward died in the crash while the captain was seriously injured.

The helicopter had gone to base camp to fetch Lakpa Gelu Sherpa who this week established a speed climbing record by climbing the mountain in 10 hours and 46 minutes. nepalnews.com br May 28


NORAD funds ICIMOD

Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) Tuesday gave ICIMOD a $2.5 million grant to implement a medium term action plan for five years beginning 2003, an announcement said.
NORAD began assisting ICIMOD in 1993.

Kathmandu-based ICIMOD works in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan. nepalnews.com br May 28


ADB awards projects

Asian Development Bank (ADB) Tuesday awarded the Third Livestock Development Project (TLDP) and the Rural Micro Finance Project (RMP) for outstanding performance, the Bank said. 

Finance Secretary Bhanu Prasad Acharya presented the awards to project representatives. TLDP first received the award in 2000 and RMP in 2001. nepalnews.com br May 28


Everest beer launched

Everest premium lager beer was launched Tuesday to commemorate the historic ascent of the world's  tallest peak 50 years ago by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary.

Mount Everest Brewery launched the limited edition of the beer in cooperation with the Nepal Mountaineering Association. The label on the bottle depicts Tenzing atop Everest on May 29,1953,
about to plant flags of Nepal, India, United Kingdom and the United Nations strung to an ice-axe on the world's highest point. 

Chairman of the Brewery Piyush Amatya said the company got permission to use the historic photograph from owners National Geographic Society of UK.

The beer was launched in the presence of some Everest heroes,  including Jamling, the son of Tenzing. nepalnews.com br May 28


Govt. ready to issue ordinance to run local bodies

Despite mounting opposition from the political parties the government has decided to run the local bodies on the basis of all-party consensus by issuing an ordinance.

The local bodies were left without elected representatives after their terms expired last year. The then government of Sher Bahadur Deuba could not conduct elections because of widespread Maoist violence in the districts.

RPP leaders agree to remain united

A group of disgruntled leaders of the Rastriya Prajatantra party announced Tuesday after holding a meeting that they had finally agreed to settle the row in the party following the word given by party president Pashupati Shumsher Rana to correct his mistakes. 

Nine RPP leaders participated in the meeting held at the residence of Buddhiman Tamang Tuesday and agreed to hold back the protests and work for the unity of the party on conditions that Rana kept his word to rectify the flaws.

Top notch leaders such as Padma Sundar Lawoti, Rabindra Nath Sharma and Dr. Prakash Chandra Lohani had recently expressed their differences with Rana accusing him of violating the party statute while making appointments in different party posts. nepalnews.com am May 28


Mainali summoned by UML for explanation

UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal sought clarification from central member Radha Krishna Mainali at the party office Tuesday for involving himself in activities that were against the party line.

During the meeting, Mainali promised not to deviate from the party line and said the media had distorted his views in the recent days. Mainali has been accused by the party for expressing views against the ongoing 'peoples' movement'. nepalnews.com am May 28

Speaker Ranabhat declines to conduct meeting

Speaker Tara Nath Ranabhat has declined to conduct the proceedings of the dissolved House of Representatives called by five mainstream political parties Wednesday in the parliament building at Singha Durbar.

The Nepali Congress said in an announcement that it would take stern disciplinary action against Ranabhat for not supporting the ongoing 'peoples' movement'. The five political parties have been launching a movement against King Gyanendra's royal proclamation of October 4, which dismissed the Deuba led Nepali Congress government on grounds of inefficiency. 

Around 150 former lawmakers belonging to the five mainstream political parties have announced that they will participate in the meeting of the dissolved House of Representatives at 11:00 am Wednesday. The ex-lawmakers will first gather at Ratna Park from where they will march to Singhadurbar to participate in the meeting. 

The ex-lawmakers of the Nepali Congress, the Communist Party of Nepal (United Marxist-Leninist), Nepal Workers' And Peasants' Party, Peoples' Front Nepal and Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Aanandi Devi) have been asked by their party leadership to come to the capital to participate in the proposed meeting.

The five mainstream political parties, have booked the Royal Nepal Academy Hall to hold the meeting in case they are prevented by the government to enter Singha Durbar. Security has been stepped up in the capital to avoid any untoward incident in the wake of the meeting called by the five political parties. nepalnews.com am May 28


India extends exemption scheme

India has extended a duty exemption pass book scheme (DEPB) facility to Jogbani and Sunauli Land Customs Stations - a facility available till recently only at Raxaul Land Custom Station, the Indian Embassy said Tuesday.

To enable the Nepali importers to source their raw materials and intermediate products from India at more competitive rates, India introduced the DEPB scheme at Raxaul Land Custom Station from November, 2002.

Following the change, exporters to Nepal also enjoyed benefits under Duty Free Replenishment Certificate (DFRC), advance license scheme (DEEC), the Embassy said.  With the success of the operation of the scheme at Raxaul Land Custom Station, requests from Nepali companies and Chambers of Commerce and Industry were received to permit imports from India under these schemes
from additional land custom stations such as Jogbani and Sunauli.

India Tuesday extended these facilities to Jogbani and Sanauli enabling the Nepali entrepreneurs in Eastern and Western Nepal to avail of the benefits enjoyed by the entrepreneurs in the Central Region around Birgunj. nepalnews.com br May 27


Ghimire, Hamal defy CIAA

Former ministers of the Nepali Congress Laxman Ghimire and Surendra Hamal did not submit property details to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) while appearing before the agency for the second time in seven days Tuesday, Agency sources said. 

The Agency had asked them to present themselves before the Commission again in seven days. Senior police officer Achyut Chalise also appeared before the CIAA Tuesday to submit inventory of personal property. 

Nepali Congress president Girija Prasad Koirala has challenged the legality of his summons by the CIAA at the Supreme Court which last week issued a show cause notice to the Agency. 

Nine politicians, civil servants and police officers appeared for the second time Monday at the CIAA which is probing official corruption in the last 13 years. nepalnews.com br May 27


Opposition protests continue

In continuing protests against the King, activists of five opposition parties blocked vehicular movement of official vehicles in the capital Tuesday, eyewitnesses said. 

Opposition party activists damaged several government vehicles, including a car of Health Minister Dr.Upendra Devkota, party sources said. Police said protests were held in other parts of the kingdom. 

The opposition said they will convene Wednesday a meeting of the dissolved parliament which will meet for two days in another protest move. 

Student activists of the five parties held a protest demonstration opposing violence during clashes with police Monday while pressing 68 educational demands.

Stop extortions says Home Ministry

The Home Ministry said in a statement Tuesday unnamed persons were collecting donations forcibly in unidentified districts and asked they stop the abuse immediately. 

The Ministry said forcible donation collections were illegal. The Ministry has issued circulars to district officials to prosecute offenders by invoking a donation act. 

Donations can be collected only with government approval, the statement said. nepalnews.com br May 27


Fire in Kapilvastu

A fire at Phatthardaija village destroyed 56 houses, mostly thatched huts, in Kapilvastu district Tuesday, district police said. There were no casualties. 

The fire started in the morning and security forces and firefighters from adjoining urban centers brought the blaze under control by three in the afternoon. nepalnews.com br May 27
