Four Maoists, one soldier killed in skirmishes Four Maoists and one soldier were killed in three different skirmishes on Sunday, radio reports said. Three Maoists were killed in Jyakmebhir, Dailekh while one of them was shot dead in Bakauni, Bajura. Security forces recovered armed and ammunitions from the incident sites, the reports said. News WB denies news reports on NDF meet The World Bank (WB) Monday denied news reports which said it was stepping down from its role as the co-chair of the upcoming Nepal Development Forum (NDF) meeting slated for May 5-6. In a statement issued Monday, the WB has said such reports were "baseless and unfounded." "We wish to clarify that it was agreed between the Nepali government and the external development partners during the last NDF meeting (February 2002) that the next meeting would be chaired by the Nepali government," the release added. News All-party government only way out, says RPP chairman The chairman of ruling Rashtriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Pashupati SJB Rana Monday reiterated that an all-party government was the only solution to the existing political impasse. “An all-party government is a prerequisite for the resolution of the political crisis,” reports quoted Rana as saying while addressing a program organized to mark the third anniversary of National Teachers Council in Sarlahi today. News Honorary consuls call on foreign minister Kathmandu-based honorary consuls Monday called on Foreign Minister Dr Bhekh Bahadur Thapa at the latter's office. On the occasion, Dr. Thapa said the role of honorary consuls is vital in promoting trade and tourism. He further urged them to work for the promotion of the same. This was the first meeting of the honorary consuls with Dr. Thapa since he assumed the post of foreign minister a few weeks ago. There are 26 honorary consuls in Kathmandu. Seventeen of them were present on the occasion. nepalnews.com mr Apr 26 04 Maoists bomb govt. office in Pokhara Suspected Maoists detonated a powerful bomb at the office of Water Induced Calamities Control Sub-division at Nadipur, Pokhara Monday afternoon. A group of Maoists took the peon of the office hostage at gunpoint at around 12.15 pm and planted a bomb inside the office, reports said. Within minutes after the Maoists got out of the office, the bomb went off. A building housing the accounts section has been completely destroyed by the explosion. News Ghanashyam Bhandari, a CPN-UML activist and former VDC chairman in Bishrampur VDC of Rautahat, was shot dead by Maoists insurgents at his home on Sunday, according to media reports. Last year, Bhandari had handed over a local Maoist to security forces, and since then he has been on the Maoist’s hit list. News Eight Maoists, three policemen killed in Lamjung Details are emerging that the firefight in Lamjung last week may have been more serious than first reported. Security sources told Nepalnews that at least eight Maoists and three policemen were killed in the clash on Wednesday in Pachok VDC of Lamjung district. According to the source, Armed Police Force inspector Nara Bahadur Thapa, constable Ishwor Hari Shrestha and an unnamed police were also killed in the shootout. "Since the camp was under unified command, the total number of security personnel deployed in the post is currently unavailable" the source added. The bodies of the security personnel were handed to their family members on Sunday. News Maoists claim to have seized land belonging to the former chief justice Dhanendra Bahadur Singh, and that of Tilak Rawal, the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank. According to a report in The Himalayan Times on Monday, the Maoists’ peasant wing said it had seized Singh’s 28 bighas of land at Padanaha, Bardiya and Rawal’s 62 bighas of land at Naulapur. They also claim to have taken over the property of ex-minister Shanti Shamsher Rana’s land in Banke. nepalnews.com pd Apr 26 04 Rato Macchindranath chariot topples Over half a dozen people were injured as the chariot of Rato Machhindranath toppled in Sundhara, Patan at 9.45 pm on Sunday. The chariot had begun its annual procession from Pulchowk on Friday, and thousands of devotees have been involved in pulling the four-storey chariot made of timber and cane. Police told Nepalnews that there had been no loss of life, and the injured were rushed to the nearby Patan Hospital. The injured were two constables, four locals and two priests. Ambulances and army personnel are at the scene. The chariot is lying on its side in a small temple square, and did not damage any buildings. News Nepal beat Malaysia by nine wickets in the ICC Inter-continental Cup played on Sunday at the Tribhuvan University cricket ground. Nepal made a total of 198 with Shakti Gauchan not out at 69 runs while Malaysia mustered only 131 runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Nepal reached an easy target of 34 runs in just 7.1 overs with Paresh Lohani scoring 16 runs, not out. Mehboob Alam and Bikash Dali scored 15 and two runs respectively. Mehboob took three crucial wickets while Rajkumar Pradhan and Sanjam Regmi took two wickets each. Mehboob was declared best bowler of the match while Shakti Gauchan was named the best batsman. With this win, Nepal stands a fair chance of entering the second round representing the Asian region.
