Parties vow to intensify stir

The five agitating political parties Saturday said they will intensify the ongoing movement against regression, saying the clampdown on peaceful protests has added fuel to fire.

Speaking at a face-to-face program at the Reporters’ Club in Kathmandu, the leaders said the government has infiltrated plainclothes security personnel into the masses to provoke violence.

“We have learnt that a number of plainclothes security personnel were mobilized to create tension,” Arjun Narsingh KC, spokesperson of Nepali Congress said. KC said the movement would continue until regression ends.

UML Standing Committee member Bharat Mohan Adhikari said the parties are determined to defy the prohibitory orders imposed by the government to restrict the protests. “Nothing will stop us,” he declared.

Expressing similar views, Nepal Sadbhawana Party (Anandi Devi) leader Hridayesh Tripathi maintained that the government’s attempt to foil the democratic movement would never succeed.

Speaking at the same program, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party spokesperson Roshan Karki said the government has fanned out violence by using force in the five-party demonstrations. “Though the RPP is not in the protests, it does not support the government’s action either,” she said. nepalnews.com mbk April 3 04

PM warns of tough action against agitators

Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa Saturday gave a warning message to the agitating five political parities, saying the government would not shy away from resorting to ‘actual clampdown’ if the agitations turn unruly.

Speaking at a program in Biratnagar, Thapa said the action the security personnel took against the agitators on Friday was necessary to control violent activities.

“Friday’s protests were anything but peaceful,” he insisted and added the government would not object to protests provided they are peaceful.

The PM came down heavily against the agitating parties for what he called unconstitutional activities in the name of protests.

Many people of Kathmandu were unaware of the strike called by the parties as it was decided only Friday evening.

Many irate cadres of the agitating parties were seen chanting ‘anti King slogans’ in the main areas of the city. Security personnel are out on high alert.

Similarly, Bharat Mohan Adhikari, senior leader of the CPN-UML saying no one can go against peoples’ will, commented on yesterday’s police intervention as, “an insane act of regression.”

“This agitation will be our final agitation against regression,” he said adding,” I assure you that democracy will be restored with in a month.”

Meanwhile, the government Friday evening has defended Friday’s indiscriminate lathi-charge and opening of tear gas upon the activists. The government said security personnel were compelled to use force as the protesters hurled stones on them.

In the meantime, Maoist supremo Prachanda issuing a press statement Friday extended his support to the ongoing agitation saying, “Monarchy has tended to take the nation back to the 18th century.”
