Maoists torch Indian vehicles

Maoists on Saturday torched 18 oil tankers with Indian number plates
in Dhangadi, various dailies Monday said.

According to the Spacetime daily, the rebels set ablaze the Indians
tankers to protest the recent arrest of Maoist politburo leaders Mohan
Baidhya and CP Gajurel by Indian authorities. The Maoists, 
distributing pamphlets have demanded the Indian government release
their politburo members immediately, the report said.

Around 350 Maoists were involved in torching the 18 Indian tankers on Saturday. The Maoists took control of 19 tankers, but one driver
managed to get away with a tanker, reports said.

In another incident in Rupandehi,  a group of rebels set ablaze an
Indian truck parked at Padshari VDC off the Siddhartha Highway. They opened fire at the Indian truck staff when they protested injuring
them, reports said. The injured are receiving treatment at a Medical

Nepal's tally: six golds at SAF Games

Nepal on Sunday won all four gold medals in the Taekwondo events on the fifth day of the ninth South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, with a total of six gold medals, reports from Rawalpindi said.

Deepak Bista, Nirmal Shrestha, Niranjan Shrestha and Sangina Vaidhya won gold for Nepal . Deepak Bista outplayed Pakistan 's Muhammad Asif Khan 12-7 despite sustaining leg injury in the quarter-final bout.  

Nirmal Shrestha outplayed Afganistan’s Ziaullah Aimal in the Bantamweight category 5-4. Niranjan Shrestha added another gold for Nepal with a 7-5 victory over Sri Lankan Ashanka Chandana.

Sangina Vaidhya won the other gold medal defeating India 's Jede Bhrishali with 3-1. Sangina is the only Nepali woman athlete to be selected for the Athens Olympics.

With a four gold medal haul on the fifth day of the ninth South Asian Federation (SAF) Games, Nepal has climbed to the fourth position in the standings. Nepal has won six golds, twelve bronze and three silver medals till Sunday.

In the eighth SAF Games held in Nepal , Nepali athletes won 14 gold medals out of 16 Taekwondo events. nepalnews.com pd Apr 05 04

Maoists attack police post in Dhanusha, kill 9 policemen

At least 9 policemen were killed in a gun battle with Maoists on Sunday in Yadukuha Area Police Post of Dhanusha district, a security source told Nepalnews. Another 14 policemen are still missing.

Police inspector Gambhir Chand and sub-inspector  Ram Balak Yadav were among dead. 

Hundreds of armed Maoists launched attack in the police post at around 9pm on Sunday. 35 policemen were present at the police post during the clash. 

ccording to a news bulletin, few Maoists were also killed in the clash but the actual number of casualties on their side is still awaited. The rebels are said to have carried away the bodies of their dead comrades. nepalnews.com pd Apr 05 04

Their Majesties visit Mustang, Beni and Baglung 

King Gyanendra and Queen Komal received civic felicitations in three districts of Dhaulagiri zone - Mustang, Mygdi and Baglung amid special functions. 

In Mustang, their Majesties were presented with felicitation notes and gifts by different organizations as well as ordinary citizens. Mustang District Development Committee chairman Nirmal Kumar Gauchan read out and later presented a felicitation note that outlined the concerns of the people in this mountainous district. 

The King and the Queen also visited the war-ravaged Myagdi district and graced a felicitation ceremony. Although the program ended quietly within an hour, the King found time to interact with Beni locals, asking them about the fateful night of March 20 - the day the Maoists launched a deadly attack in the district headquarters. 

Their Majesties also attended a similar function in Baglung. Thousands of people flocked to the felicitation venue to see the royals.

“Most of those who had a word with the King asked for better security prospects,” an official at the Baglung DDC told Nepalnews over telephone. nepalnews.com mbk April 4 04

Seven Maoists killed in clashes 

At least seven Maoist rebels have been killed in clashes with the security forces in different parts of the country on Sunday. 

Three Maoists including two women were killed in a security operation at Bhadaure area in Dolkha district early Sunday morning.

Reports quoting security sources said the rebels were shot dead as they tried to hurl socket bombs at the patrolling security troops. The dead have been identified as Sundar Karki, Binita and Nita.

Similarly, four Maoists were killed this morning in an exchange of fire with security forces at Hasulima area in Kalali district. Reports said a large number of explosives have been recovered from the incident site. 

Meanwhile, the Maoists last night killed a civilian at Amardaha VDC, Morang. Chuwa Janida Mia was dragged out of his house and was shot to death at a few yards away, reports said. nepalnews.com mbk April 4 04

Anti-regression protests continue, over a dozen hurt

Anti-regression protests of five political parties continued for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday. 

Protestors staged rallies from different parts of Kathmandu Valley from early in the morning. By the afternoon, thousands others joined in. They marched past major thoroughfares of the city, chanting anti-regression slogans.

Confrontations were reported at several places in which over a dozen leaders and activists, including UML leaders Bamdev Gautam and Bharat Mohan Adhikari, Nepali Congress leaders Arjun Nrsingh KC were injured. Those having serious injuries are undergoing treatment at Bir, Model and Miteri hospitals. 

Meanwhile, students of Trichandra Campus have demanded the government withdraw the prohibitory orders around the campus. A delegation of students met Tribhuvan University vice-chancellor Dr Govind Sharma asking him to lobby against the prohibitory orders.

Maoists bomb Home Minister’s house, other details 

Maoists detonated a powerful bomb at the ancestral home of Home Minister Kamal Thapa in Hetauda Municipality, Makawanpur on Saturday evening. 

According to reports, a group of Maoists carried out the explosion at the building located at Kantiraj Path at around 7.30 in the evening. Two policemen who were on guard were injured and two shops on the ground floor were destroyed in the blast. 

Meanwhile, the rebels torched 18 tankers that were parked inside the premises of the office of a resettlement company in Kanchanpur on Saturday night. 

Reports said the tankers were hired to supply oil to the Nepal Oil Corporation. Most of the tankers have been destroyed beyond repair. nepalnews.com mbk April 4 04 


“No immediate extradition of Baidhya” 

An Indian official at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday dismissed the possibility of an immediate extradition of Maoist leader Mohan Baidhya to Nepal, The Katmandu Post reported Sunday. 

The official preferring anonymity said that there was not enough evidence to prove that Baidhya was involved in anti-social activities in India. They will be tried in Indian courts and could be jailed for at least six months, the daily reported the official as saying.

The official, according to the daily, claimed that the case can become complicated and sensitive with the discovery of evidence that Baidhya had developed nexus with Indian militant outfits, the like of KLO and ULFA. 

The official also revealed that about 150 fighters of the KLO entered east Nepal to help the Maoists, the daily said. 

Indian police arrested Mohan Baidhya alias Kiran, a senior politburo member of the CPN-Maoist and his companion Narayan Bikram Pradhan in the bordering Indian town of Siliguri, last Monday. Narayan Bikram Pradhan, is a permanent resident of India’s Jalpaigudi. nepalnews.com pd Apr 04 04

Second gold for Nepal at SAF games

Rupa Kumari Syangden on Saturday added another gold medal for Nepal in the 9th South Asian Federation Games by beating Bhutan’s Tshering Laden in Taekwondo, reports from Rawalpindi said. 

Rupa outplayed Tshering scoring eleven points including three, five and three points in the first, second and third round respectively. 

“I am very pleased today as I beat all my opponents quite comfortably,” The Kathmandu Post reported Syangden as saying.

Similarly, Nepal on Saturday got another bronze in Table Tennis. Rajendra Kapali and Gita Thapa bagged bronze medals in the mixed double category of Table Tennis.

Nepal has won two golds, three bronze and one silver medals till Saturday. Nepalnews.com pd Apr 04 04

King and Queen in Manang

King Gyanendra and Queen Komal continued their tour of the Western region by flying on Sunday to Hongde airfield in Manang.

Nepal Television showed pictures of the royal couple being welcomed
by locals in traditional hats, offering khadas to the King and Queen as they walked about mingling with the people. 

King Gyanendra also unveiled a statue of his father, King Mahendra, put by by grateful Manangis near the airfield.

It was King Mahendra's decision after a visit to this remote valley in 1967 to ease passport formalities for the people here that helped Manangis to travel freely to trade and is seen as the reason of the region's current prosperity.  

Local people asked the King for better education facilities, improving electric supply and an increase the frequency of flights to Manang which is not connected by road to the rest of the country. nepalnews.com pd Apr 04 04
