Late King Birendra’s birth anniversary observed

The 60th birth anniversary of late King Birendra Bir Bikram Shahdev was observed with various programs around the country Wednesday. 

In Kathmandu, a program was organised at Jawalakhel to pay tribute to the late King. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, ministers and people from different walks of life garlanded the statue of the late King Birandra at Jawalakhel Chowk.

Addressing the function, the Prime Minister said the late King was a peace-loving ruler who remained committed, throughout his life, to the development of the country. Deuba also vowed a to fulfil the aspirations of the late King. 

On the occasion, a squad of the Royal Nepal Nepalese Army paid gun salute in the honour of the late King. 

Similarly, statues of late King Birendra and late Queen Aishwarya were unveiled amid a function at Gothatar today. Speaker of the House of Representatives Tara Nath Ranabhat unveiled the statues.

Programs were organised in districts such as Sindhupalchowk, Jhapa, Biratnagar, Sankhuwasabha and Udaypur to mark the birth anniversary of the late King. 

Late King Birendra is the first constitutional monarch in Nepal’s history. He was killed in a gruesome massacre that took place at the Narayanhiti Royal Palace on June 1, 2001. In his three-decade-long rule, he ushered several development projects and established balanced and friendly ties with the foreign countries. nepalnews.com mbk Dec 29 04
