NSC confirms Nepal's participation in SAF Games

Nepal Sports Council Monday confirmed Nepal's participation in the  upcoming South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Member Secretary of NSC Kishor Bahadur Singh revealed this while talking to Nepalnews. "We are participating in the SAF Games," he said.

Challenging the South Asia Sports Federation (SASF) and the  International Olympic Committee (IOC), Singh said that according to the Charter, nobody has authority to bar Nepal from participating in the event on grounds of the row between the Nepal government and Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC).

The article 21 of SASF Charter revised on 6th November 1996 clearly
states that a nation can participate in the mega event of the region  through the national Olympic Committee or any supreme sports governing body of the country.

In the present context of Nepal, when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has yet to recognize the newly formed Nepal Olympic Committee headed by Kishor Bahadur Singh, as per the provisions of article 21, NSC can take the charge of sending Nepali players to participate in SAF Games.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of Olympic Council of Asia and also a member of IOC, Raja Randheer Singh is arriving in Nepal on Monday to take stock of the affairs concerning the dissolution of the NOC headed by Rukma Shumsher Rana. IOC in its letter to PM Surya Bahadur Thapa had given an ultimatum to settle the row within a month. The deadline ran out on February 12.

Though it was said that Singh is meeting only with PM Thapa in his visit, Kishor Bahadur Singh was optimistic that the IOC representative
will meet all the sports-related authorities to sort out the row.

Nepal lose opening match against England

Nepal lost the opening match against England by 8 wickets in the
Under-19 Youth World Cup Cricket that kicked off in Bangladesh on Sunday.

wickets in the allotted 50 overs match. Sharad Veswakar knocked a
record breaking 82 runs with the help of 9 boundaries off 115 balls

Petroleum sales come to halt

Petrol pumps, including 105 in the capital, have stopped sales and distribution of all petroleum products from Monday morning owing to a dispute with Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), reports and witnesses said.

As a result, beelines of Kathmanduites were seen in the seven petrol pumps run by the army, police and armed police in different locations of the capital, witnesses said.

The dealers have been demanding that the NOC withdraw its decision which banned them from selling kerosene in their petrol pumps.

NOC, on the other hand, has been defending its decision, saying it will discourage the dealers to "mix up" kerosene with other fuels like petrol and diesel.

Meanwhile, an FM station, Radio HBC "revealed" that the Nepal Petroleum Dealers' Association has issued a secret circular to all its members across the country not to carry out their businesses from Monday.

The Radio, quoting sources, said, the Association has also warned the dealers that it would charge them as high as Rs.200,000 if they disobey the circular. nepalnews.com mr Feb 16 04
