Two reporters nabbed on murder charge Police Saturday apprehended two journalists associated with Jana Aastha weekly charging them of murdering Kollywood actress Shrisha Karki one and half years ago, reports said. District Police Office Kathmandu detained reporters Bishwamani Subedi and Yadav Prasad Pandey, who submitted a scurrilous news report along with the naked photograph of Srisha in October 2002, the reports said. Shortly after the publication of the report and photographs, a distraught Shrisha committed suicide. The police on Friday produced the duos at Kathmandu district court, which has remanded them for five days prior to initiating a murder case, according to the reports. nepalnews.com mr Jan 11 04 Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) index, a barometer of the share trading, last week recorded a marginal fall of 0.67 points despite increase in the number of share transactions. The Nepse index on Monday recorded 201.51 points, which on Friday stood at 200.84 points. On group-wise manner, manufacturing group, insurance group and finance group gained in their respective indices. However, the rest of the groups either remained constant or witnessed a fall. Commercial group, though recording a marginal slip, topped the total trade volume with 72.33 percent of the total trade at the stock market. Altogether 44,535 share units were traded through 940 share transactions at over Rs 9.99 million, against previous week's trading of 24,889 share units through 788 transactions at Rs.6.79 million. News The CPN-UML on Saturday formally agreed to go for a new Constitution, even while adopting a "middle way" for the purpose, a "way" that should be ratified by the parliament, published reports said Sunday. The party, despite disagreements among committee members on the issue of going for a republican set-up, agreed to go for a new Constitution, which the members argued should be ratified by the parliament, the Himalayan Times said. "The issue of constituent assembly concerns the King, while the Maoists are not ready to accept the existing constitution," the daily quoted a UML leader Shankar Pokhrel, as saying. "Because of this, the party chose to go for the middle way with the hope it will be acceptable to both sides - the King and Maoists," Pokhrel said. He further said the party will have to "rethink" if the Maoists reject the new constitution, according to the daily. The central committee meeting also agreed to "keenly observe" the slogans and activities being carried out by the students against the monarch, the daily said. News Students affiliated to five parties Saturday continued "anti-regressive" protests in and outside Kathmandu chanting aggressive slogans. Leaders of the five agitating parties also took part in the rallies. In Kathmandu, the protesters passed through major thoroughfares of the city and converged into a corner meeting at Ratnapark. Vice president of Nepal Students' Association, Pradip Poudel and secretary general of All Nepal National Free Students' Union (ANNFSU), Khimlal Bhattarai addressed the meeting. District reports said such protests were also held in Butwal, Tanahu and Pokhara, among other places. Protesters burned the effigies of "regression" in the respective places, according to the reports. News Security forces Saturday shot dead a woman Maoist during an encounter in Khotang, radio reports said. The dead has been identified as Sabitri KC. One more Maoist rebel Sarita Lama was wounded in the cross firing, the reports said. The security forces recovered socket bombs, explosives and other equipments in the encounter. Meanwhile, Maoists have murdered civilian Munasik Kawari on Saturday. Kawari was a political activist of Rastriya Prajatantra Party, reports said. News ADB approves $450,000 grant for promoting South Asia tourism The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $450,000 technical assistance grant to develop a tourism plan for the four countries belonging to the South Asia Sub regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC). ADB says the tourism development plan for SASEC members - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal - covering the decade from 2004 to 2014 "will help promote economic growth and reduce rural poverty. Working through a participatory approach, the technical assistance would involve the tourism industry's public and private sectors and other stakeholders in developing a framework programme and project concepts. News Two traffic policemen shot dead A group of 10-12 Maoists Saturday morning shot dead two traffic policemen in the western city of Dhangadhi, reports said. The dead were police constables Prem Singh Kunwar and Shaligram Sharma. Two civilians were also injured in the shooting, the reports said. Security forces, meanwhile, shot dead a Maoist, Bhola Takma in Rautahat Friday evening. The Maoist was killed in retaliatory action when he shot policeman Dipak Bahadur Tamang, the reports said.
