Educational activities crippled across Nepal

Regular studies and educational activities have been severely affected with most schools closed across the country, countrywide reports said. The Maoists affiliated students –ANNISU-R announced an indefinite strike in all urban-based educational institutions in Nepal from today.

According to reports received from across the country, most private and government owned schools and colleges in rural areas have also been closed. The ANNISU-R had said their strike would be based ‘only in urban areas’.

The ANNISU-R has announced the strike demanding the immediate implementation of the accord met between the organization, the government and the educational institutions last year.

The Maoist affiliated students, the government and the educational institutions had agreed to curtail 29 percent of the fees from the existing structure. The government had also agreed to provide free education up to the secondary level and to curtail 25 percent fees in the higher secondary level. Moreover, ANNISU-R has demanded the removal of the terrorist tag labeled against the union. nepalnews.com pd June 06 04

Rains affect Mugling highway

Heavy pre-monsoon showers in the past few days have again seriously disrupted traffic along the Mugling-Narayangadh highway and affected the main artery linking the valley to the tarai.

A 26 km section of the highway was damaged by a heavy cloudburst last July. Because of delays in repairs during the dry season, travellers fear that the early arrival of the monsoon will soon make the road impassable.

At least ten major landslides have blocked the road, and in places the
highway has been completely washed off, and it has sunk along a seven km stretch. It can now take anywhere up to 12 hours to travel the 36 km highway, a journey that used to take an hour. Nepalnews.com pd June 06 04

NC rules out support to Deuba; UML to join govt

The Nepali Congress has denied support to the Deuba government, saying the appointment of the prime minister was no different than that of the earlier two prime ministers.

This was announced after the meeting of the Central Working Committee on Saturday. The NC also declared that the ongoing anti-‘regression’ movement would continue.

Talking to reporters, NC spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said Deuba’s appointment could not be dubbed a success or even a ‘partial success’ as said by the CPN-UML. “Unless sovereign rights are fully restored to the people, there will be no end to the agitations,” he said.

The CWC meeting will continue on Sunday as well. They will most likely discuss the proposal of Narahari Acharya who has demanded that a meeting of the General Committee be called on short notice to review the principles upheld by the party.

Meanwhile, a meeting of the central committee of the CPN-UML today discussed a proposal of general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal on current political situation.

UML sources said that the party has decided to pull out of the ongoing agitations. In today’s meeting, standing committee member Bam Dev Gautam tabled a written proposal demanding participation in the Deuba government.

The meeting was on till 7:30 pm. nepalnews.com mbk June 5 04
