Palpa DDC chairman, mayor quit

More officials nominated by the Surya Bahadur Thapa government including the Palpa District Development Chairman (DDC) Dul Bahadur Kunwar and the mayor of Tansen Municipality, Bhimsen Karki, resigned on Monday according to various reports.

The deputy mayor of the Tansen Municipality also resigned from his post.

Meanwhile, reports from Syngja say that local officials have also resigned.DDC of Gulmi, Chitra Bahadur Thapa, quit his post on Monday. The Maoists had abducted Thapa on 14 May and have promised to release him after his resignation is accepted.

Most of the officials have cited personal reasons for their resignations,
however it is common knowledge that the rebels have been pressurising them to give notice. nepalnews.com pd May 18 04

CIAA files graft case against ex-officials

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a graft case against 27 ex-officials of the Janakpur Municipality at a Special Court on Monday.

Accusing them of amassing property by collecting illegal taxes, the CIAA filed a case against Bajranga Prasad Shah, the former mayor of the
municipality, Kishori Shah, deputy mayor of the city, ward chairmen from all the 16 wards and nine contractors involved in the racket.

According to reports, if proven guilty they might face imprisonment for up to six years. nepalnews.com pd May 18 04

Three Maoists killed in clashes 

At least three Maoists were killed in clashes with security forces in separate incidents Monday. 

One Maoist was shot dead at Jhiling, Nuwakot this morning, reports said. The militant whose identity was not known was killed when his group opened fire at the security forces carrying out a search operation in the area. 

In Syangja, one Maoist was gunned down this morning at Sri Krishna Gandaki VDC when he was trying to plant a bomb inside the Kaligandaki ‘A’ Hydroelectric Power Project. The Maoists also tried to ambush a vehicle carrying security personnel but could not succeed, d reports said. 

Likewise, a Maoist was killed in a shootout in Sarlahi district at around 7am. nepalnews.com mbk May 17 04

King interacts with civil society on political crisis 

King Gyanendra consulted with various personalities of the civil society regarding the resolution of the existing political crisis Monday. 

Some 300 personalities of the civil society including journalists, industrialists and artists were invited at Gokarna Royal Retreat this afternoon. 

Most of the invitees put their advices collectively while few were given separate audiences. The King, according to participants, was attentive to the suggestions put forth and at times asked for further explanations. 

The participants informed that most of the personalities stressed the need for a broad political dialogue to bring about peace and stability in the country. nepalnews.com mbk May 17 04

Maoists torch ambulance

Maoists set an ambulance on fire in Dhankuta Monday afternoon. 

A group of seven Maoists stopped the ambulance at Rudrabari, got the driver out and set it on fire, reports said. The rebels also torched a Land Rover at the same place this afternoon. 

Meanwhile, two security personnel were injured in a landmine blast at Jagurama area in Surkhet this morning. The injured, reports said, are in critical condition. nepalnews.com mbk May 17

Rajbiraj Mayor, other officials quit

Scores of officials nominated by the Surya Bahadur Thapa government including the Mayor of Rajbiraj Municipality, Shyam Kishor Singh, quit their posts on Sunday, various reports said. 

According to the reports, three other officials of Rajbiraj Municipality also resigned. They announced their collective resignation amidst a press conference organized on Sunday afternoon.

Similarly, 17 among the 40 nominated Village Development Committee Chairmen of Makwanpur district also resigned on Sunday, reports added. Likewise, the Vice-Chairman of Sindhuli District Development Committee also resigned from his post on Sunday.

Although most of them have cited personal reasons behind the resignations, they are learnt to have been under continuous pressure from the Maoists. nepalnews.com pd May 17 04

Blast at Labor Tribunal

Suspected Maoists set off a bomb at the premises of the Labor Tribunal at Gyaneswor, Gaucharan in Kathmandu on Monday morning.

According to the police, there were no casualties in the explosion. There was some damage to furniture, windows and the main stairs of the building. The police added that a search operation is underway to track down the rebels. nepalnews.com pd May 17 04

Prachanda for roundtable conference

Maoist leader Prachanda reiterated the need to resolve the current conflict through roundtable talks consisting of the political parties, the King, the civil society and the UN. This was his second statement for the need of talks since the resignation of the Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, he urged the five agitating parties and civil society to take the initiative for roundtable dialogue. He asked them to not undermine the present political alignment in the name of the unity among the pro-constitutional forces.

Outlining the need for an interim government Prachanda urged all concerned to formulate a new constitution through the election of a constituent assembly saying, "[It] can find a way out of the current conflict and political deadlock."

Prachanda charged that the pro-constitutional forces have made the crisis more complicated. nepalnews.com pd May 17 04

33 climbers conquer Everest

Thirty-three climbers, including 14 Sherpas, ascended the world's highest peak, on May 15 and 16. The climbers went through the southeast ridge used by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

The climbers belonged to four different international expedition groups -
INHA University Joyful Expedition, International Everest Expedition
Spring 2004, Chilean Mt. Everest Expedition 2004 and Himalayan Guides Everest Expedition 2004.

Some of the climbers to ascent Mt. Everest included Martin Boileau, a
Canadian eye surgeon, Kilian Volken and Peter Gschwender, Swiss and Austrian mountain guides and Ms. Anabella Bond from Britain.

The other climbers were from South Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Scotland and the USA.

The Sherpa climbers were from Taplejung, Sankhuasabha, Solukhumbu and Dolakha districts. nepalnews.com mr May 17 04

Appa Sherpa reached the Everest summit for 14th time on Monday morning, according to reports from Base Camp. He broke his own record for the most number of climbs to the world's highest summit.
