News The govt. has full backing from the King and India: PM Deuba Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said his government enjoys full backing from His Majesty the King and India.
Talking to `Disha Nirdesh' programme at the state-owned Nepal Television Monday evening, the premier said India was providing as much support as Nepal was demanding. The Prime Minister rejected outright the prospect of third party mediation in the proposed peace negotiations with the Maoist rebels. "We will do it ourselves," he said. The premier said (unlike in the past), the negotiations should now be kept away from media glare. When asked by Bijay Kumar, host of the popular talk show, if the government had any informal contacts with the Maoist leadership, the Prime Minister said, "No comment." He also refused to comment on if the government would go for unilateral ceasefire. A confident looking Deuba said he believed that there was no military solution to the present conflict and that there should be a political solution. "But if they continue their offensive, the state can't keep mum," he added. When asked if the government was ready to go for constituent assembly as demanded by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), premier Deuba said (the government) was ready to be flexible as much as possible. "You should understand what it means," said Deuba. "We are ready for give and take once negotiation starts," he added. The premier said half a dozen questions posed by Maoist chairman, Prachanda, were meant for creating rifts between the government and Army, King and political parties and King and the Army. Responding to another question, Premier Deuba-- who also holds Defense portfolio-- said that the Royal Nepalese Army was obeying all 'rightful orders' given by the government. "I chair the National Security Council and things are running smoothly," he said. "I can also ask if the 'people's army' is under the control of the Maoists. But I would not do that," he added. During over half an hour long interview, Premier Deuba claimed that the country had returned to the situation as of October 4, 2002 with the appointment of his government. Responding to a question on the demand for reinstatement of the dissolved parliament, Deuba said it was not possible. "Nobody has the authority to supersede the (Supreme Court) verdict," said the prime minister adding the only way out was fresh elections. He, however, did not explain how that could happen amid escalating conflict. nepalnews.com by Oct 12 04 Govt. makes public whereabouts of over 100 people The government made public whereabouts of 126 more people, said to have 'disappeared' after they were detained by security forces.
