News Govt. offices, diplomatic missions remain closed; TV stations drop entertainment programmes As the country mourns the death of 12 Nepalis killed in Iraq Thursday, Government as well as private radio and television stations have dropped their regular entertainment programmes Thursday and have been playing patriotic and national songs. Some stations have also appealed people to remain united during the hour of crisis and not be swayed out of emotions. Meanwhile, leaders of major political parties urged people for calm and restraint during an interaction programme Thursday. Leaders of Nepali Congress, Nepali Congress (Democratic), CPN (UML), among others, urged people to maintain peace and harmony in the society. Opposition leaders criticized the government for what they said its diplomatic failure in dealing with the hostage crisis. curfew was relaxed for a few hours Thursday morning. NTB makes transport arrangements for tourists Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has made special transportation arrangements for air passengers and tourists to and from Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) during the curfew period. Chief executive officer of NTB, Tek Bahadur Dangi, told Nepalnews that the Board had made arrangements for special buses to pick up from and drop tourists at the TIA in coordination with security agencies. Indian Airlines flight from Delhi and Thai International Airways flight from Bangkok arrived at Kathmandu airport on Thursday. "Tourists arriving from international airlines were escorted to major hotels in the capital," said Dangi. He said that no tourist was harmed during Wednesday's demonstrations in the Nepali capital against the killing of 12 Nepalis in Iraq. "We hope the situation will improve and come to normal within acouple of days," he added. Meanwhile, in a press statement the NTB has requested all tourist and air passengers to contact its valley command office at telephone number (977-1) 4220000 to get information of the route of the transportation services. The statement also said that all regular flights except Qatar airways, Maoists not to hold talks with Deuba govt The CPN-Maoist has said it will not hold peace talks with the Deuba-led government. The decision came following a meeting of the Central Committee of the party held recently at an unknown location in Dang district. Quoting inside sources, Annapurna Post daily Thursday said the rebel leadership has ruled out the possibility of dialogue with the government citing the latter’s failure to make suitable environment for talks. The report further said the rebel leadership has also urged the King to explain his idea of resolving the present crisis. The Central Committee meet has reiterated the demand for United Nations’ mediation in the peace negotiations. The Central Committee has, however, decided to initiate dialogue with ‘anti-regression’ political parties including the Nepali Congress, the report said. The Maoists are yet to disclose the decision of the meeting officially. nepalnews.com mbk Sept 02 04 People in Kathmandu rushed to collect supplies as govt. relaxes curfew People of Kathmandu went out of their houses to buy vegetables and other daily supplies on Thursday morning as government relaxed the indefinite curfew orders for few hours. Most business houses were closed however, teashops, pharmacies, ration shops, vegetable marts were opened. Hundreds of people gathered to see the loss at the office premises of Qatar airways, Air Sahara, Kantipur television, Spacetime Publication and other over 100 manpower agencies in different parts of the Nepali capital. On Wednesday afternoon, the offices were vandalized by groups of irate youths. Prices of vegetables and fruits had shot up in the Kathmandu market due to the government -imposed curfew Wednesday but the prices of other commodities have remained the same. No untoward incidents have been reported in Kathmandu Thursday morning. Public vehicles were seen providing services to the people of Kathmandu, however, the city was deserted once again as the army men took up their position requesting people to go to their houses. News Indian PM, US Secretary of State condemn killings of Nepalis Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, called Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba Wednesday and expressed sorrow over the killing of 12 Nepalis in Iraq. According to Foreign Ministry, both the leaders condemned the killing of innocent Nepalis and expressed their solidarity with the people of Nepal in the hour of grief. Dr. Man Mohan Singh assured every possible support on part of the Indian government to the Nepal government, the Ministry said. Similarly, US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, called Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Deuba and extended deepest sympathy on behalf of President George Bush, the US government and himself to King Gyanendra, the government and people of Nepal at the sad incident. News Killing of Nepalis provokes nationwide protests Killing of 12 Nepali hostages by a group of Islamic militants provoked nationwide protests on Wednesday, reports said Thursday. Local administration in eastern terai district of Jhapa imposed an indefinite curfew at Anarmani, Birtamod in the district after a crowd turned violent. People in Jhapa mourned the death of Prakash Adhikari, a resident of the district. Irate students brought traffic to a halt temporarily in the major industrial town of Biratnagar. Janakpurdham, the district headquarters of southern terai district of Dhanusha, was also grief stricken as four of the Nepalis killed in Iraq were from this district. Shops and educational institution remained closed on Wednesday in the district. Students brought out rally and disrupted traffic along the Mahendra highway by burning tyres in Hetauda in central Nepal. An all-party meeting at the district administration office appealed people to maintain calm and restraint. In Pokhara, students of Prithvi Narayan campus burnt effigies of Moonlight company-that sent Nepali workers to Jordan who were later diverted to Iraq-and Iraqi rebels. They also chanted slogans against the government. The tourist town, however, remained calm throughout the day. Demonstrations took place in Rupandehi, Uadypur, Khotang, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts, among others, in protest of killing of Nepalis in Iraq. News Curfew partially lifted in Kathmandu and Lalitpur Local administrations in Kathmandu and Lalitpur have partially lifted curfew orders within the city areas Thursday. According to the district administrations, curfew has been lifted for three and half hours (between 6:00 AM through 9:30 AM) on Thursday. The curfew will be imposed from 9:30 AM on Thursday until further notice, an announcement over the state-run Radio Nepal said. The government had imposed curfew within the Ring Road and surrounding areas of Kathmandu and city areas of Lalitpur from 14:00 hours Wednesday after thousands of protesters vandalized over 100 offices of manpower agencies in the capital, targeted foreign airlines, two leading publication houses, Jama Masjid at Ghantagahar and destroyed public and private properties. They were protesting against the killing of 12 Nepalis by a group of Islamic militants in Iraq Tuesday. At least two persons were killed and dozens others were injured during clashes with police in Kathmandu, reports said.
