| Nepal Telecom employees warn of protests against closure of mobile phone services
Nepal Telecom employees are preparing to launch protests to exert pressure for the resumption of mobile phone services.
The Nepali telecommunication gaint has already suffered a loss of Rs.950 million due to the closure of operation since Feb 1, officials said.
Citing the losses, the Nepal Telecommunications Workers Association and the Nepal Telecom Workers Union in a joint press statement Friday said they were ready for any kind of protest against the prolonged closure of mobile phone services as well as for the job security of employees.
According to the statement, the government’s revenue loss due to the closure of operation has amounted to Rs.400 million with no concerned sides explaining when exactly the services are going to resume. The trade unions demanded that the government give permission to resume the services and compensate the losses.
The Nepal Telecom, that has distributed 249,000 mobile phone lines including 173,200 pre-paid lines, has been running into a daily loss of Rs.8 million since Feb 1.
The trade unions also lashed out at the Nepal Telecom management for its indifference towards resuming the services. nepalnews.com mbk Apr 30 05
