Scores injured in student protests against
fuel price hike
Several people including journalists were injured in student
protests against the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products
in Kathmandu on Monday.
Students staged demonstrations in front of public campuses around
Kathmandu this afternoon. Scuffles occurred at a few places as
riot police intervened the protests. At Ghantaghar, central Kathmandu,
a few students, two policemen and two journalists were injured
as the protesters and the police clashed.
Police had indiscriminately baton charged anybody on the streets
including journalists. They beat up and injured Kantipur Network’s
cameramen Narendra Shrestha and Image TV reporter Ajay Sibakoti
even as gave their identities, it is said.
Protesting students burned tyres on the street and chanted slogans against what they call anti-people decision of the government to hike the prices of petroleum products. They also carried out a torch rally in front of Tri Chandra Campus.
Vehicular traffic in and around Ghantaghar remained obstructed as the protest continued for over an hour. Streets were littered with stones, bricks and burning tyres.
The government had raised the price of petroleum products, save for cooking gas, by Rs.5 per litre on Friday. nepalnews.com mk Aug 22 05
