NC youth leaders urge party to remove monarchy from its statute

Youth representatives of the Nepali Congress (NC) general convention have urged the party leadership to remove all provision related to monarchy from the party’s statute.

In a press conference organised by the youth leaders in the capital on the eve of the NC’s vital Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, the youth representatives said the party should remove all provisions associated with monarchy from the party statute and let the people decide the matter. The leaders also urged the party to endorse the agenda of Loktantra.

Warning the party not to be trapped by the games of the palace, they urged the party leadership not to consider even the inclusion of ceremonial monarchy in the statute.

“The party should mention, in its policy and program, that the Nepali people’s verdict on the monarchy will be acceptable to the NC,” the press statement issued by the youth representatives said.

On possible alliance with the Maoists, the convention representatives said the party must think over alliance with the Maoists only if the latter publicly expressed their commitments to multiparty democracy, supremacy of parliament, human rights and press freedom.

Over 30 youth representatives of Nepali Congress (NC) general convention including youth leaders Biswo Prakash Sharma, Dhanraj Gurung, Gagan Thapa, Umesh Jung Rayamaghi and others had organised the press conference.

Meanwhile, NC leader Shailaja Acharya has said there is a serious ploy to destroy the life and soul of the country’s largest democratic party.

Issuing a statement on Saturday, leader Acharya said, “There is intense polarization between active monarchy and republicanism in the country which is weakening the middle path of the NC. NC will collapse once it leaves middle path.”

In the NC, Ramchandra Poudel, Shailaja Acharya, among others, are leading the middle path while Narahari Acharya, among others, are leading the republicanism path. nepalnews.com pd Aug 28 05
