16 students hurt in clashes with police
Sixteen students in different places in the country were injured when police intervened in torch rallies carried out by the student unions opposing the government's decision to hike price of petroleum products (POL) Saturday . Police also arrested six student leaders from the rallies.
In Kathmandu, 14 students were injured when police baton charged students demonstrating against the recent increase in the petroleum products.
Protests were also carried out in Nepalgunj and Bara. Three student leaders were arrested in Nepalgunj while two others were injured when they clashed with policemen in Kalaiya, headquarters of Bara district.
Meanwhile, demanding immediate release of the detained colleagues the student organizations have stated that they would continue protests unless the government withdrew the price hike.
The government, recently, increased the retail prices of POL by Rs 5 per liter, citing losses caused by the widening disparity between the domestic and international petroleum products.
As per the decision, petrol per liter will cost Rs 67, diesel Rs 46, kerosene Rs 39 and air transport fuel Rs 53. Earlier, the government had increased the LPG gas Rs 900 from Rs 800 per cylinder. nepalnews.com pd Aug 28 05
