NC removes constitutional monarchy from its statute

In what can be regarded a historic decision, the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the major opposition Nepali Congress (NC) party has decided to remove all provisions related to monarchy from the party’s statute.

Hot agenda: Nepali Congress President GP Koirala going through the draft agenda,...

Talking to Nepalnews, the NC spokesperson Arjun Narsingha KC said that the NC removed all provisions related to monarchy from the party’s statute. He, however, said that the reference of constitutional monarchy is included in the preamble of the party’s constitution.

According to sources, NC leader Shailaja Acharya opposed the decision writing a note of dissent.

In yesterday’s CWC meeting, majority of the leaders opined that democracy and monarchy could no longer go together.

The NC has taken the decision while approving the party’s plans and policies drafted by NC leader Ram Chandra Poudel and his panel after discussing on it for two days. The panel's recommendation to the party states that democracy cannot remain safe as long as the monarchy remains in place. nepalnews.com Aug 29 05
