Days before the unilateral ceasefire announced by the CPN (Maoist) comes to an end, CPN-UML General Secretary, Madhav Kumar Nepal has urged the United Nations to exert pressure to restore peace in Nepal.

Addressing a far western zone level mass meet in Mahendranagar on Tuesday, Nepal said the UN needed to accord high priority to the current situation in Nepal and needed to persuade the Maoists to extend ceasefire.

“I draw the attention of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to the fact that tens of thousands of innocent Nepalis will lose their lives if the ceasefire is broken and urge him to exert pressure upon the King to declare ceasefire in order to stop the resumption of war,” reports quoted Nepal as saying.

The unilateral ceasefire announced by the Maoists will end on January 2. General Secretary Nepal alleged the King and his followers of acting irresponsibly even when the seven political parties were attempting to restore peace.

He said that the Rolpa incident has hinted the possibility of resumption of war. Two Maoists and one security personnel were killed during a clash between security forces and Maoists in Rolpa on Sunday. He also demanded a field investigation of the Rolpa incident.

He reiterated that the stir of the alliance of seven opposition political parties against what they call ‘regression’ would continue till the end of monarchy, and until the election to the constituent assembly is held and a republican democracy established.

Stating that the world was backing the democratic movement, Nepal said the 1990 Constitution had turned into a meaningless piece of paper.

Speaking at the same programme, UML standing committee member, Bamdev Gautam highlighted the need to turn the RNA into a national army.

Stating that UML had gone for the democratic republic, Gautam said, “I think the remaining six parties will also not stand in favour of the King anymore.” nepalnews.com pb Dec 28 05
