Brahimi urges all forces to jointly work for return to constitutional order

Wrapping up his six -day Nepal visit, Lhakdar Brahimi, special advisor to UN secretary general Kofi Annan, urged all political forces, including the Maoists, to work together so as to restore constitutional order and peace in the Himalayan Kingdom.

Addressing a press meet in Kathmandu on Friday afternoon, he said Nepal was currently facing a very serious crisis. Brahimi said, “A solution is needed urgently and it (solution) rests on “three” critical elements. According to him, a return to constitutional order and multiparty democracy, an end to hostilities and an inclusive national dialogue were needed to solve the current crisis Nepal is facing.

On UN mediated peace talks, Brahimi said that Nepal was herself capable of developing necessary process for a peaceful resolution of the prevailing conflict. He, however, added, “It will remain available to provide its assistance in whatever form may be needed.”

Brahimi, during his stay here, met with His Majesty the King, senior government officials and major opposition leaders and discussed the current political crisis in Nepal. Recalling his meeting with His Majesty, he said, “The King realizes that situation in Nepal is abnormal and it needs to get in order. “ He did not elaborate.

About the Maoists, he urged them to renounce violence and take part in the political process before the situation of the country deteriorates further.

Saying that the mission of his visit was to obtain closer understanding of the situation and recent developments in Nepal, Brahimi said he would report his findings to the secretary general on his return.

Brahimi, who arrived in Kathmandu Sunday leading a three-member delegation, left Friday evening. He is the most senior UN official to visit Nepal in recent months. nepalnews.com pd July 15 05
