Journalists stage nationwide protests
The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ)- umbrella organization of the Nepali journalists- staged nationwide protests demanding press freedom and restoration of the democratic process in the country Sunday.
In Kathmandu, after staging a sit-in at Bhotahity, journalists took out to a rally that passed through Ason and Indrachowk. Later, the rally was converted into a corner meeting at Indrachowk.
Addressing the corner meeting, leaders demanded complete press freedom in the kingdom.
In Pokhara, journalists, human rights activists and political party jointly demanded restoration of press freedom. The demonstrators, rallying along the major thoroughfares, converged into a mass meeting at Mahendrapool.
Reports from Dhangadi said a FNJ branch organized protest rally converted into a mass meeting at LN Chowk. Similarly, journalists in Mahottari, Jaleswor, Biratnagar and Sarlahi staged sit-ins and demanded total press freedom for peace and democracy.
A report from Banke said that journalists, demanding press freedom, carried out a motorcycle rally from Nepalgunj to Kohalpur. The rally turned into a corner meeting at Kohalpur.
Meanwhile, journalists in Chitwan blew whistles and conch-shells in Dhankuta demanding press freedom. Rights activists and party workers had joined their demonstrations. nepalnews.com pd June 27 05
