High alert on Nepal-India border

Amid reports that heavily armed Maoists have sneaked into Nepal after attacking a bordering town, Madhubani, in the Indian state of Bihar, security personnel along the common, open border between the two countries have been kept on high alert, reports said.

The Kathmandu Post daily quoted DIG of Police, Champaran, Bihar, S K Bhardwaj as saying that they have alerted superintendents of police in four bordering districts of Nepal (including Parsa and Rautahat). We have also alerted the Indian embassy in Kathmandu, he added.

It was not clear whether the Maoists who managed to sneak into Nepal were Nepali rebels or their Indian comrades.

The Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has already denied its hand in the daring raid in Madhubani—the bordering town some 26 km south of Nepal-India border—on Friday.

The attack, which has been described by Indian security officials to have been carried out with ‘military-style precision, left four security personnel and at least seven rebels dead.

Meanwhile, India Today, a leading Indian newsmagazine, in its latest issue has reported that the (Indian) Maoists have, in the past one year, increased their presence from 55 districts in nine states to 102 districts in 13 states.

Indian officials now describe the Maoist insurgency as their number 1 internal security problem in the country. nepalnews.com by June 28 05
