UML activist shot dead in Bara during demonstration (6:00 PM)

A CPN (UML) activist was shot dead and 10 others were badly wounded as security personnel opened fire at a crowd demonstrating against the government clampdown on pro-democracy movement of the seven opposition political parties in Nijgadh, Bara district, Monday afternoon.

Security personnel deployed for the security of Agricultural Development Bank in Nijgadh indiscriminately opened fire at the demonstrators from the rooftop of the building, a local UML leader told Nepalnews.

Hiralal Gautam, a resident of Ward No 2 of Nijgadh, who died in the firing, became the sixth person to be killed in government actions on pro-democracy protests around the country.

Krishna Adhikari, head of the publicity department of the UML’s Bara District Committee said the security personnel opened fire without any provocation from the demonstrators. The security persons fired dozens of live rounds at the protesters, he said.

10 others including journalists Gokul Gorsaine and Guru Gautam, who received bullet injuries in the firing, have been taken to Narayani Sub-regional Hospital in Birgunj. The condition of four of the injured persons is said to be critical.

Thousands of people assembled in Nijgadh from various parts of Bara to protest against the royal government on the 12th day of the nationwide general strike of the seven parties. nepalnews.com mk/by Apr 17 06
