Five policemen injured in Maoist attack at APO

At least five police personnel were injured when a group of Maoists attacked unarmed policemen at recently re-established area police office (APO) Rajahar of Nawalparasi, Friday afternoon.

The Maoists also torched the police post and forced the policemen out after beating them up.

The Area Police Office, which is some 70 km from the district headquarters Kawasoti, was re-established only Thursday evening.

Sub-inspector Tek Bahadur Kunwar, assistant sub-inspector Jagulal Kunwar and police constables Chhabi Lal Thapa, Suresh Kumar Sunari and Hom Bahadur Kumal were injured, report quoted Deputy Superintendent of Police at APO (Kawasoti) Krishna Tiwari as saying.

Tiwari added that injured policemen are undergoing treatment. The Maoists instigated students, locals and passengers of buses to attack the police office, policemen said.

Before setting fire to the office, the Maoists ferried out all the goods from the Police office and sent these to Kawasoti on a bus.

“The Maoists attacked us as we did not heed their warning to leave the office,” Sub Inspector Tek Bahadur Kunwar said.

Meanwhile, local Maoists said they will go all out to oust the police if the latter try to stay there.

The Maoist attack came at a time when Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala claimed to have reached agreement with Maoist chairman Prachanda on re-establishment of displaced police posts.

Talking to journalists at his hometown Biratnagar on Friday, Prime Minister Koirala said that Maoist chairman Prachanda agreed not to create obstacle for re-establishing displaced police posts and let the secretaries of village development committees return to their respective villages to expedite the process of holding the elections of the constituent assembly. nepalnews.com pb Dec 30 06
