Freed Kamaiyas capture land in Tinkune

Freed Kamaiyas (bonded labourers) have built 50 huts after capturing empty land at Tinkune.

They said that they will make 300 huts in the area. Freed Kamaiyas have come from various parts of the country to pressurize the government to provide land and other facilities to them after organizing district-based protests.

They have been demanding appropriate provision of shelter and other facilities to all freed Kamaiyas and to issue identity cards to them.

The Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government had declared abolition of the ‘Kamaiya system’ in July 2000 and promised free land and collateral loan to help them launch their own enterprises. Former Kamaiyas, however, say majority of them are still landless and have no means to sustain their families.

According to them, of the freed 35,621 Kamaiyas, 19,477 of them are yet to get land from the government. nepalnews.com pb Dec 31 06
