Finland assures necessary help to Nepal; DPM Oli holds bi-lateral meetings

The government of Finland, next president of the European Union (EU), has assured of all necessary help for the successful transition towards peace and stability in Nepal.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, Erkki Tuomioja, during his meeting with Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) KP Sharma Oli in the sidelines of the first meeting of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva assured all possible help in Nepal’s peace process.

A press statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Nepal Geneva said the duo also discussed the timetable for the Constituent Assembly election, ceasefire, peace process and its monitoring.

Likewise, the statement further said DPM Oli also held bilateral meeting with Federal Councilor, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Mrs. Micheline Calmy-Rey at the sidelines of the HRC meeting and discussed issues of bi-lateral interest.

Switzerland welcomed the achievement of the democratic movement and expressed its full support to the initiatives and decisions taken by the democratic Government of Nepal following the restoration of multiparty democracy.

She also assured Switzerland’s continued support for the successful transition towards establishing permanent peace and stability and economic development in Nepal.

Similarly, DPM Oli also held bilateral meeting with Yang Jiechi, Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Peoples Republic of China at the sidelines of the HRC meeting and discussed matters of bilateral and international concerns.

Welcoming the new democratic Government in Nepal following the restoration of democracy, the Vice-Minister stated that China wanted to see peace, stability and development in Nepal.

He also appreciated Nepal’s consistent position of one-China policy and assured of China’s continued support and cooperation to Nepal in the days ahead.

DPM Oli assured the Vice-Minister that Nepal would consistently follow the one-China policy.

Likewise, DPM Oli also had a meeting with the UN General Assembly President Jan Eliasson at the sidelines of the HRC meeting.

“He applauded the new Government’s commitments to human rights in the changed political context and said that the international community appreciated the commitments highlighted by Hon. DPM during his address at the HRC Session,” the statement said.

The UN General Assembly President welcomed the initiatives taken by the democratic Government of Nepal towards establishing enduring peace and stability in the country, the statement adds. nepalnews.com pb June 20 06
