PM, Prachanda hold meeting to finalise peace accord
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala is holding discussion with Maoist chairman Prachanda to finalise the peace accord, which is likely to be signed later today.
The two are discussing some points of the draft of the peace accord on which the talks teams of both the government and the Maoists failed to agree on despite having several rounds of negotiations, it is learnt.
Prachanda had arrived at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar at around 12:00 in the afternoon along with his deputy, Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai.
They are also supposed to discuss on the draft of the interim statute, which should be finalised today as per the November 8 agreement.
Initially, the peace accord was scheduled to be signed on November 16 but owing to lack of homework, the signing ceremony was postponed for today.
As the Maoist side demanded that peace accord and interim statute be finalised simultaneously, it is expected that interim statute would also be finalised today.
Once signed, the peace accord will formally end the decade-long civil war in the country. nepalnews.com ia Nov 21 06
