VDC secretaries halt works nationwide
VDC secretaries across the country stopped their work for a day as part of their pre-scheduled protest programme on Sunday.
The VDC Secretaries Rights Protection Centre said they were compelled to continue the strike as the government failed to fulfill their demands, which include security in workplaces and life insurance worth Rs 1 million.
The secretaries have been carrying out strike every Sunday for three weeks now, protesting the government’s failure to implement the 9-point agreement it had signed with them in July.
On December 2, the Centre had announced the weekly strike for one month and had also warned of an 8-day strike from January 6.
The Centre, which accuses the government of being insensitive towards providing security to VDC secretaries in the face of growing attacks and threats from armed Terai groups and criminal gangs, has also threatened to indefinitely close down the local bodies if the demands are not met even after these protests programmes. nepalnews.com mk Dec 30 07
