Four-party meeting deferred
The meeting of the top leaders of four major political parties slated for Monday morning was postponed due to the “busy schedule” of Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
The meeting was to discuss division of portfolios in the future interim government.
A meeting of the four parties – Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), CPN (Maoist) and Congress (Democratic) – on Sunday had ended inconclusively with the parties sticking to their claims on major portfolios.
All four political parties are demanding plum ministries like Finance, Home and Defence in the interim government.
Top leaders of other three political parties had gathered at the Prime Minister’s residence this morning but the meeting could not be held as Prime Minister Koirala had to go out, reports said.
CPN-UML leader Jhal Nath Khanal said the meeting could not be held due to Prime Minister’s busy schedule.
Successive meetings of the top leaders of the eight parties could not arrive at a consensus on power sharing.
As the four-party meeting could not be held in the morning, it is not certain whether the eight-party meeting slated for this afternoon will be held or not.
General secretary of the Left Front CP Mainali said the meeting of eight political parties would not be held before the leaders of four political parties reach consensus on division of portfolios. nepalnews.com pb Mar 26 07
