Govt decides against hike in fares of public transportation

The government on Friday resolved not to increase fares of public transportation for now despite the hike in prices of petroleum products.

The decision to this effect was taken in a meeting between government officials and transport entrepreneurs at the Ministry of Labor and Transport Management Friday morning.

During the meeting, the government also decided to form a new committee headed by director general of the Department of Transport Management to recommend the increment in transportation fares in scientific manner. The committee, which would also comprise representatives of transport entrepreneurs, has been directed to submit its report to the Ministry within 20 days.

Reports said that discussions are going on to increase the fares of public transport running on diesel, petrol and gas by 6 percent, 9 percent and 35 percent respectively, .

Minister of State for Labour and Transport Management Ramesh Lekhak and Secretary at the Ministry Shyam Mainali were also present at the meeting.

However, public transport vehicles like three-wheelers and microbuses have already raised their fares following the hike in prices of petroleum products and LP gas.

Although no transport association has issued a formal notice regarding the revision of fares, three-wheelers and microbuses plying in the valley have increased their fares by 15 to 20 percent, depending on the route. nepalnews.com ag Nov 02 07
