Polarisation begins among parties as voting in parliament approaches
The communist parties have intensified their closed door discussion on Friday as well to avert the possibility of the republic proposal receiving minority vote in the parliament.
In the morning, UML general secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal held discussion with chairman of the People's Front Nepal Amik Sherchan and semi underground community leader Prakash at his residence in Koteswore this morning.
After the discussion at Nepal's residence, Amik Sherchan and Prakash met separately meeting with Maoist leaders.
Similarly, Maoist chairman Prachanda, Dr Babu Ram Bhattarai, UML leader Bam Dev Gautam, Amik Sherchan, PFN vice president Lila Mani Pokhrel and Prakash held closed door meeting for one voice in the parliament. The meeting was held at the PFN head office at Tinkune.
Maoists have urged the other left parties for a communist front in the parliament to establish republic. However, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and the Left Front led by CP Mainali today have rejected the idea of a united front at this hour.
As communist parties speed up their discussion for common stand, Nepali Congress also held internal meeting to chalk out strategy to face the communist challenge. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala met with senior leaders of the party early morning for discussion over the latest political developments.
The continued discussions among the leaders and their failure to reach an consensus has delayed voting at the parliament over the proposal filed by the Maoists for announcement of republic through interim parliament and adopting a full proportional representative election system. nepalnews.com ia Nov 02 07
