Preparation for voting in parliament begins
A meeting between the Nepali Congress and the CPN-Maoist Friday afternoon failed to arrive at a consensus on the latter’s proposal filed at the parliament.
Failing to find a middle ground, the leaders decided to go for voting in the parliament to decide the Maoist proposal, which seeks parliamentary proclamation to turn Nepal into a republic and adopt a voting system based on proportional representation.
Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula told reporters after the meeting that the parties would now go for voting in the parliament.
Sources said the NC proposed for joint a commitment of the parties in the parliament to announce republic by the first meeting of constituent assembly, but the Maoist leaders remained firm on their demand.
The parties have begun preparation for voting and the parliament, scheduled to begin hours before, is expected to meet shortly for voting.
The parliament is expected to see vote on two sides – communists voting in favour of republic while NC and its allies against it. The CPN (UML) has already decided to vote for the Maoist proposal. nepalnews.com ia Nov 02 07
