Parliamentary panel confirms Maoist hand in Shah's abduction
A parliamentary committee formed to investigate into the abduction of Bara-based journalist Birendra Shah, has concluded that Maoists were behind the abduction.
The committee led by UML lawmaker Urmila Aryal stated in its report that Maoist cadres including Lal Bahadur Chaudhary, Kunjan Faujdar, Hare Ram Patel had abducted journalist Shah a month ago.
The report also too the government to task for failing to take action against the abductors who still are roaming freely.
The parliamentary committee submitted the report to Speaker Subash Nemwang at a function on Friday, urging the government to bring the culprits to book.
Speaker Nemwang on his part said the parliament give direction to the government for necessary action to be taken over the suggestions given by the committee.
He further said the parliament would also monitor if the government sincerely implemented the words it has given regarding the calls for legal action against the culprits.
Maoist chairman Prachanda has already conceded the involvement of party cadres in the incident and assured to make whereabouts of Shah by Saturday. He has also assured to hand over the alleged kidnappers to the local authority.
Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had also given similar assurances during his meetings with Shah's wife Umarawati and the delegations of media groups.
The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has warned of street protests if Shah's status is not publicised within the given timeframe. nepalnews.com ia Nov 02 07
