Second stage verification begins at 4th PLA division
Second stage verification of Maoist combatants began at the People’s Liberation Army’s 4th division in Jhyaltungdanda, Nawalparasi district, Saturday.
Verification of the PLA combatants cantoned in two satellite camps will be conducted from the main cantonment itself.
UNMIN officials said they are planning to verify an average of 500 PLA men a day. There are some 5000 combatants in the 4th division.
The UNMIN has completed second stage verification at the PLA cantonments in Ilam, Sindhuli and Kailali districts.
Though the results of the second stage verification have not been made public UNMIN officials are known to have found a big number of underage (below 18 yrs) combatants.
UNMIN chief Ian Martin in a recent interview with an India news site also revealed that the Maoist army has a “significant” number of minors. However, the Maoists have not reacted to the UNMIN finding. nepalnews.com mk Nov 03 07
