Gobardhan Pooja today; Nepal Era New Year 1128 being celebrated

Gobardhan pooja - the fourth day of the Yamapanchak (Tihar festival) - the second biggest festival of Hindu is being celebrated throughout the country Saturday by worshipping oxen.

Oxen are worshiped on this day as they till the land and help grow crops to sustain life.

Ox is worshipped with tika, garland and then a delicious meal is fed to it on the occasion. People who follow lord Krishna perform 'Gobhardan pooja'. They build a small hill made out of cow dung and put some grass on it then perform pooja on it.

This pooja symbolises the act of lord Krishna when he lifted the gobhardan hill and saved millions of people and cows from floodwater.

Similarly, people belonging to Newar community within the country and abroad perform Mha pooja (self worship), which is regarded a unique way of venerating the god who resides within every human being.

They give themselves blessings to remain healthy and happy for the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, New Year 1128 of Nepal Era is also being celebrated on Saturday. This era is said to have been started by Shankhadhar Shakhwa who, according to the legend, had emancipated thousands of people from serfdom by paying back their loans by using magical powers. Shakhwa is considered a National Hero by the government.

Last week, Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala had told a delegation of Manka Khala that he would be using Nepal Era in his official letter-pads also. The Manka Khala is leading a campaign to make Nepal Era as the official era of Nepal. Currently, Nepal uses Bikram era. nepalnews.com sd Nov 10 07
