KMC starts transporting city’s garbage to Sisdole

The dispute over valley’s waste management that led to piling up of garbage in the streets of the capital city has been solved after the Maoist aligned YCL asked an apology with the local contractor of Sisdole.

Some two weeks ago, YCL activists had abducted and thrashed contractors Ram Kumar Ghimire and Shiva Thapa at the Waste Management and Resource Mobilization Center where they had gone to submit a tender for a construction bid. Following the incident, the locals of Sisdole had stopped Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) from transporting city waste to the dumping site located there from the past ten days to protest excesses by Maoist-aligned YCL cadres.

Following the obstruction, KMC had suspended collection and management of valley’s waste for an indefinite period, leading to piling up of garbage in the major thoroughfares and streets of the capital city during the Tihar festival. Last week, with the capital city stinking with uncollected garbage, hence causing major eyesore and health concerns, KMC had asked the Sisdole locals to allow its garbage trucks to transport city’s waste to the landfill site located there.

On Tuesday evening, there was a breakthrough in the talks between Sisdole locals and Young Communist League (YCL) representatives at the KMC office after the two sides agreed to cancel the controversial tender for a road construction project to Sisdol and the YCL agreed to tender a public apology for the involvement of its cadres in the beating of the contractor duo.

“No matter what kind of differences may have been there between us prior to this, we would never get involved in these kind of incidents from now on,” it has been stated in the agreement letter jointly signed by the two sides.

KMC’s Environment Department chief Rabin Man Shrestha told Kantipur Daily that the municipality trucks have started to transport city’s garbage to the dumping site.

“The garbage that remain piled up in the city’s street would be collected till Sunday,” he said. nepalnews.com ag Nov 16 07
