Chhath being celebrated across the country
The third day of the great festival of the Mithilanchal, Chhath, is being celebrated by the people of Terai today by going to the rivers and ponds, singing folk and devotional songs and offering prayers to the sun god.
The third day is especially significant for married women in Terai as they observe a two-day fast and offer prayers while keeping almost three-quarters of their body immersed in water for two hours. As this is the festival in which the sun is worshipped when it rises and sets, they would end this day by worshipping the setting sun later in the evening. Tomorrow is the fourth day of the festival and is called Paran or Parwan, and the womenfolk worship the rising sun, marking the end of the festival
Devotees in Terai region of Nepal had observed the first day of the festival – called Arba Arbain or Nahan Khan – by fasting and discarding meat, garlic and onion. The second day, which is called the Kharana (meaning the reduction of sin), was observed in a similar manner.
The people of Terai are celebrating Chhath festival in the capital city too like every year by congregating around ponds and streams in Ranipokhari, Thapathali, Gaurighat, Balkhu including other places.
The festival bears a great significance on increasing the faith of the mankind on truth and non-violence as well as sympathy to all the living beings. nepalnews.com ag Nov 16 07
