Press Chautari submits memorandum to govt

Press Chautari Nepal has submitted a memorandum to the government asking for efforts from the state to find the whereabouts of the abducted journalist Prakash Thakuri and actions against those involved in murder of journalist Birendra Shah.

The memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala through the district administrations by Chautari's district committees in 63 districts across the country.

The memo also seeks public apology from the Maoists and commitments from them that such incidents would not be repeated in the future.

The memorandum was a part of the protest programmes announced by Press Chautari against Shah's murder.

In the meantime, the government has formed a five-member committee to investigate the status of Thakuri, who was abducted about four months ago from far west Nepal.

The committee is led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajendra Khadka and its members include administrative officer of the District Development Committee Kanchanpur Hari Prasad Aryal, two inspectors of the Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department.

The decision to form the committee was taken by the cabinet on Thursday. The cabinet had directed the home ministry to launch investigation immediately. The probe committee has been given 15 days time. nepalnews.com ia Nov 16 07
