Maoist No. 2 Dr Baburam Bhattarai has warned that the Nepali Congress “will have to pay a heavy price” if it goes against the directive of the parliament to declare the country a republic and adopt proportional voting system.
Addressing a mass meeting organised by the party in the capital Monday, Dr Bhattarai said Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala would have to step down if the government fails to implement the House directive. He argued that defying the House directive and still continuing as the head of coalition cabinet would be unacceptable.
“The Nepali Congress will have to pay a heavy price if it goes against the decisions of the parliament,” warned he.
Describing the constituent assembly election as an indispensable part of the peace process, Bhattarai claimed that his party is committed to holding the election.
According to him, there have been continuous attempts to corner the Maoists even as the agendas they have raised have been firmly established.
Bhattarai was the main speaker at the mass meeting held at Naya Baneshwor. The Maoists organised similar mass meetings in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur as part of their nationwide “people’s mobilisation campaign” which is aimed at exerting pressure on the government and the allies to implement the proposals passed by the recent special parliament session. nepalnews.com mk Nov 18 07
